WoW Forever Barrens Guide: The Crossroads, Ratchet, Wailing Caverns and New Quests

The Barrens is the wide Kalimdor plain where Horde characters in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) go after Durotar and Mulgore, with beta-client areas set at levels 10 to 25, three flight masters (the Crossroads, Camp Taurajo and Ratchet) and three dungeons: Wailing Caverns, Razorfen Kraul and Razorfen Downs. Forever Changes, a community data site, says Blizzard has not published a level range of its own, so the numbers below come from the beta client and community sources.

Quick answer: Orcs, trolls and tauren reach the Barrens around level 10, make the Crossroads their base and add Ratchet and Camp Taurajo as they climb. Wailing Caverns is the lowest-level of the three dungeons, at levels 17 to 24 in Warcraft Tavern's list. The zone is Horde-controlled, but Ratchet is neutral.

Barrens route from the Crossroads to Ratchet and the dungeons
Route in order: the Crossroads is the main Horde travel hub, Camp Taurajo is a Horde hub with a flight master, Ratchet is the neutral goblin port with a boat to Booty Bay, Wailing Caverns is a dungeon at levels 17 to 24, one database lists four new quests at levels 14 to 23, and Razorfen Kraul and Razorfen Downs lie further on.

The Barrens is where a Horde hero stops being a newcomer. Warcraft Wiki calls the land a massive savanna where settlers inevitably meet centaur warbands and quilboar raiding parties, with the Crossroads as a Horde hub and Ratchet as a goblin port.

Key facts

  • Control: Horde-dominant and contested, with Ratchet neutral (Warcraft Wiki).
  • Flight masters: The Crossroads, Camp Taurajo and Ratchet (Forever Codex, Forever Changes).
  • Dungeons: Wailing Caverns 17 to 24, Razorfen Kraul 29 to 38, Razorfen Downs 37 to 46 (Warcraft Tavern).

How do you reach the Barrens?

Every road into the plain begins in another zone. Warcraft Wiki names Razor Hill in Durotar as the starting point for orcs and trolls, and its quest table has Takrin Pathseeker at Razor Hill give Conscript of the Horde (level 12), which leads to Crossroads Conscription at Far Watch Post. Tauren come from Mulgore: Kirge Sternhorn at Camp Taurajo gives Journey to the Crossroads (12). An unofficial mmonster route puts Undead characters here at 16 to 20, after Silverpine Forest. Start with the Durotar guide, the Mulgore guide or the Horde leveling zones guide.

What can you do at the Crossroads?

Warcraft Wiki calls the Crossroads likely the biggest travel hub for Horde characters, with 13 flight paths in the original game. Its quest table lists Thork with Disrupt the Attacks (12), Supplies for the Crossroads (14) and The Disruption Ends (15); Sergra Darkthorn with Plainstrider Menace (12), The Zhevra (13) and Prowlers of the Barrens (15); and Gazrog with Raptor Thieves (13). Forever Codex counts 39 quests from 14 givers here, spanning levels 10 to 26, and 17 quests at Camp Taurajo, levels 18 to 30.

What does Ratchet offer?

Ratchet is a neutral goblin port, and Warcraft Wiki says both Horde and Alliance flight masters stand there, along with a boat to Booty Bay. Its quest table has Sputtervalve giving Wenikee Boltbucket (14), and Chen's Empty Keg (15), which ends with Brewmaster Drohn. Forever Codex counts 41 quests from 15 givers at Ratchet, from level 14 to 47.

Which dungeons are in the Barrens?

Three instances sit in the zone, and the sources disagree on levels. Warcraft Tavern's Forever list gives Wailing Caverns 17 to 24, Razorfen Kraul 29 to 38 and Razorfen Downs 37 to 46. Warcraft Wiki's original-era page gives 15 to 23, 24 to 33 and 34 to 41. Forever Codex adds that Wailing Caverns has eight bosses and ends with Mutanus the Devourer. Read the Wailing Caverns guide before you queue.

What is new in the Barrens in WoW Forever?

Forever Codex says the zone keeps its original map but has four new quests, quoting game-client text: Parts and Pieces (14), WANTED: Bruuz (20), Chol'aruk the Ravener (21) and Wrongly Blamed, Justly Corrected (23). Forever Changes, another community site, lists no specific Barrens changes and says NPCs stand where they stood in the original game, though Forever may have moved some. Neither is a Blizzard source. For the people who live here, read the quilboar guide. The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable background as you cross the plain, and the optional Willo Windows companion answers lore questions by voice.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Level range: Warcraft Wiki says 7 to 30 and the beta client says 10 to 25. Forever Changes says Blizzard has published none.
  • New quests: Forever Codex lists four; Forever Changes lists none. Check in game.
  • Data source: Forever Codex says its quest hubs come from a database of the original 1.12 game and may differ in Forever.
