Who Are the Quilboar? The Razorfen Thorn-Folk and Agamaggan Explained

The quilboar are the boar-like people of the Barrens, thorn-dwellers who believe they descend from the demigod Agamaggan, and their strongholds are the bramble dungeons of Razorfen Kraul and Razorfen Downs. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft (year 25 after the Dark Portal), Warcraft Tavern lists Razorfen Kraul at levels 29 to 38 and Razorfen Downs at levels 37 to 46, both in the Barrens.

Quick answer: Agamaggan, a boar demigod, died fighting the Burning Legion, and thorny vines grew where his blood fell. The quilboar settled them as sacred ground. Charlga Razorflank rules Razorfen Kraul, and Razorfen Downs, once the quilboar capital, fell to the Scourge. Warcraft Tavern says both dungeons are largely unchanged from Classic.

The quilboar, from Agamaggan to Razorfen Downs — A five-step story of the quilboar: the demigod boar Agamaggan dies fighting the Burning Legion, thorny vines grow where his blood fell, Charlga Razorflank rules the bramble maze of Razorfen Kraul at levels 29 to 38, Razorfen Downs falls to the Scourge, and Amnennar the Coldbringer is its final boss at levels 37 to 46. In WoW Forever both dungeons are largely unchanged from Classic apart from loot and rewards. Sources: Warcraft Wiki, Warcraft Tavern and writeups.org.

The quilboar made their holy places out of thorn. In the Barrens, two bramble dungeons lie across the road from each other.

Who are the quilboar and what is Agamaggan?

A people with no cities needs a story to hold it together. Warcraft Wiki and writeups.org both say the quilboar are boar-like people tied to the demigod Agamaggan, who died in the War of the Ancients, and that thorny vines grew where his blood fell. Warcraft Wiki adds that he died fighting the Burning Legion. Warcraft Tavern's Razorfen Kraul guide says the dungeon formed when Agamaggan fell, and that the quilboar are rumored to be his descendants. Warcraft Wiki's Razorfen Kraul page calls them the believed mortal offspring of the god and says they regard the thorny Razorfen as his resting place.

Warcraft Wiki says the quilboar settled the thorn areas as sacred ground and that the Razorfen is the heart of them. For the empire that fought that war, read The Burning Legion explained.

What is Razorfen Kraul?

Razorfen Kraul is the bramble maze in the southwest corner of the Barrens. Warcraft Tavern says its paths cross above and below one another and that Charlga Razorflank, a level 33 elite priestess, is the final boss. Warcraft Wiki lists the same boss and levels 29 to 38, and names Overlord Ramtusk, Agathelos the Raging, Death Speaker Jargba, Aggem Thorncurse and Roogug among its bosses.

Warcraft Wiki says Charlga conquered the Kraul and that some speculate she has been negotiating with Scourge agents. writeups.org calls her the Crone of Razorfen, a warlock who seized Razorfen Downs and the Kraul and made a deal with the Scourge for death powers. See the dungeons guide for how the Kraul fits the level 29 to 38 group.

What is Razorfen Downs?

Razorfen Downs was the quilboar capital, and it changed hands in a way the sources tell differently. Warcraft Tavern says the Scourge invaded the old capital and converted it into an undead stronghold, and that Amnennar the Coldbringer, a servant of the Lich King, is the final boss. Warcraft Wiki's quilboar page says the Razorfen and Death's Head tribes allied with the Scourge and that Amnennar the Coldbringer turned the Downs into a Scourge stronghold. writeups.org says Razorfen Downs was the quilboar fortress and the base of their most powerful clerics. Warcraft Tavern places it across the road from the Kraul, in the southeast of the Barrens.

For the Scourge itself, read The Scourge and the plague explained.

Who do the quilboar fight?

They fight everyone who wants the water and the land. Warcraft Wiki says the quilboar have long fought the tauren and the centaur over land and food. writeups.org says that just before the Cataclysm they fought the tauren of Thunder Bluff, the centaur tribes of the Barrens and the orcs of Orgrimmar. Warcraft Tavern's orc overview says the Durotar storylines include conflicts with quilboar. Warcraft Wiki lists the Bristleback tribe in the southern Barrens and Mulgore, and the Razormane in the Barrens and Durotar. The Barrens, Mulgore and Durotar guides cover those roads. The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable background in each zone, and the optional Willo voice companion answers lore questions. Both are fan-made.

Later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever, Warcraft Wiki lists more quilboar tribes in later expansions. This article leaves them there.

What is not confirmed yet

Blizzard has not published Forever-specific quilboar lore. Warcraft Tavern says only that Razorfen Kraul and Razorfen Downs are largely unchanged from Classic, apart from loot and rewards.
Sources disagree about how the Scourge came to Razorfen Downs: Warcraft Tavern says the Scourge invaded it, Warcraft Wiki says the quilboar tribes allied with the Scourge, and writeups.org says Charlga made a deal with them. Warcraft Wiki's Razorfen Kraul page calls her talks with the Scourge speculation.
Warcraft Wiki's quilboar page places Razorfen Downs near Thousand Needles, while Warcraft Tavern places it in the southeast Barrens.
Warcraft Wiki's Patch 1.60 page lists Razorfen Kraul at levels 30 to 36 and Razorfen Downs at 38 to 44; the ranges in this article (29 to 38 and 37 to 46) come from Warcraft Tavern's dungeon list, and Warcraft Wiki's Classic page for the Kraul gives 29 to 38.
