Can You Pre-Download WoW Forever? Install Size Explained
Can you pre-download World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever)? Blizzard's launch post, starter guide and Shop page do not mention pre-loading, while Wowhead says all players can pre-download and TimeSaver says Blizzard has announced no pre-load date for players with only a subscription. Blizzard's Battle.net Shop page lists 128 GB of available SSD space for WoW Forever. This is the state of play on the morning of November 4, 2026, launch day.
Quick answer: Open the Battle.net app, choose World of Warcraft, set Game Version to WoW: Forever and see whether Install is available. Sources disagree on pre-loading. Keep 128 GB free on an SSD, which is Blizzard's stated requirement.
Free the space first; the clock matters less.
Key facts
- Launch: November 4, 2026, 3:00 p.m. PST; maintenance 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. PST (Blizzard, Blizzard Support)
- Space required: SSD with 128 GB available, for minimum and recommended specs, Windows and Mac (Blizzard Shop)
- Reported install: closer to 50 GB (TimeSaver, "players report")
- Pre-load: conflicting
Can you pre-download WoW Forever?
Blizzard's statement first: neither the November 3 launch post, the October 28 starter guide nor the Shop page mentions pre-loading. The starter guide gives the steps: install the Battle.net desktop app, sign in, install World of Warcraft and select World of Warcraft: Forever from the game versions.
Outlets conflict. Wowhead's maintenance news says everyone, including players without a Skyborne pack, can now pre-download. Icy Veins, in an article dated November 2, says "You can preload WoW Forever right now" and walks through the Install button. TimeSaver, updated November 3, says pack owners can install now, that Blizzard "hasn't announced a pre-load date for subscription-only players" and that "reports are mixed". I cannot settle this; your own Battle.net app is the test. Seeing the Install button for WoW: Forever means you can start. If you do not see it, wait for launch (common-sense advice).
How big is the WoW Forever install?
Blizzard's Shop page lists "Solid State Drive (SSD) 128GB available space" for both the minimum and recommended specifications on Windows and Mac. That is free space needed, not necessarily the download size. A Blizzard forum post from September 16 (a player, not Blizzard) complained that Blizzard had not said whether it is truly a 128 GB install or whether it shares data with modern WoW. TimeSaver says players report the clean install is closer to 50 GB, and less when another WoW version shares the drive. That is a third-party report, not a Blizzard figure. The Lore Forever add-on's own downloads are separate (see below).
How long will the download take?
No source I opened gives a download time. As arithmetic only: if the install were 50 GB, a steady 100 Mbps connection would take about 67 minutes and 1 Gbps about 7 minutes, before any Battle.net or server slowdown. Treat those as best cases.
When can I download WoW Forever?
Per the outlets above, possibly now. The game itself opens at 3:00 p.m. PST; Blizzard Support's maintenance schedule lists it as unavailable from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. PST on November 4. Neither Blizzard Support nor the outlets say downloads stop in that window. If the Install button is missing, see how to download and install WoW Forever and can't install or download fixes.
What is not confirmed yet
- Whether pre-loading is open to subscription-only accounts; the sources conflict.
- The true download and on-disk size. Blizzard Support's general requirements article (7682) covers World of Warcraft and Midnight, not Forever, so I did not use it.
- How long the install takes at launch-day speeds.
How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?
When the game is in, the free Lore Forever add-on is optional and fan-made. Its downloads page lists The add-on at 303 MB, Storyteller at 1.7 GB (recommended) and Everything at 3.0 GB (the sizes change often). Willo is a separate companion app, free to start with 50 answers a day; she can be wrong and is not official. Setup order: install the game, add-on and Willo and the launch checklist.
