Do You Need to Buy WoW Forever? Cost, Subscription and Free

You do not have to buy World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) as a product: Blizzard says access is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time, and the optional packs are only needed for extras such as the Skyborne race. It is not free to play, except for the Invite-A-Friend launch week, November 4 to 11, 2026. As of the morning of November 4, 2026, the day the game opens at 3:00 p.m. PST.

Quick answer: Pay for a subscription or Game Time and you can play. Buy the Heroic Pack or higher only for the Skyborne race. Prices below are from Blizzard's US Battle.net Shop on the morning of November 4; other regions differ.

What you need to pay for in WoW Forever: a subscription or Game Time gives access; the Skyborne Heroic Pack, Epic Pack and Warcraft Forever Collection are optional, and the Skyborne race needs the Heroic Pack or higher; an Invite-A-Friend code covers November 4 to 11 for accounts with no upgrade.
Access and optional packs, from Blizzard's pre-purchase post and Invite-A-Friend support article.

A gate, a toll and a few optional trinkets: that is the whole shop.

Key facts

  • Access: included with a World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time (Blizzard, launch and pre-purchase posts)
  • Optional packs: Skyborne Heroic Pack, Skyborne Epic Pack, Warcraft Forever Collection (Blizzard)
  • Skyborne race: needs the Heroic Pack or higher (Blizzard Starter Guide)
  • Pack prices: $29.99, $59.99 and $79.99 on the US Battle.net Shop page; Gfinity and TimeSaver report the same
  • Free week: Invite-A-Friend codes, access November 4 to 11, 2026 (Blizzard Support)

Do you need to buy WoW Forever to play?

No separate purchase. Blizzard's launch post says WoW Forever is a permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW, and the pre-purchase post says access is included with your subscription or Game Time and that World of Warcraft, Forever included, requires one of them. Blizzard's Starter Guide lists subscribing or buying Game Time as a step before installing. See what you need to play.

Is WoW Forever free?

Not on its own. The only free route Blizzard documents is an Invite-A-Friend launch code: its support article says the code gives the account access from November 4 through 11 without a subscription, can be redeemed until November 11, is not Game Time, and excludes the new race and its starting zone. Codes cannot be redeemed on accounts that bought any Forever upgrade. I found no Blizzard statement on a free trial for Forever. See is WoW Forever free and Invite-A-Friend.

What do the optional packs add?

Blizzard's pre-purchase post lists three. The Heroic Pack has the Skyborne race and Zephras Isle, Early Name Reservation, a mount, cosmetics and one Invite-A-Friend code. The Epic Pack adds beta access, 30 days of Game Time from November 4, extra cosmetics and pets, and three codes in total. The Warcraft Forever Collection adds Warcraft III: Reforged and the Forsaken Kingdom campaign, and runs until January 11, 2027. Early Name Reservation ran through November 3 (PST). Compare in which edition to buy and Skyborne: worth it.

How much does WoW Forever cost?

Blizzard's launch and pre-purchase posts state no prices, but its US Battle.net Shop page, opened on the morning of November 4, lists $29.99 for the Skyborne Heroic Pack, $59.99 for the Epic Pack and $79.99 for the Warcraft Forever Collection. Its World of Warcraft subscription page lists $14.99 a month for one month. Gfinity and TimeSaver report the same pack prices. Prices vary by region and can change, so check the Shop for your own; see also subscription cost.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Prices outside the US store, and whether they change after launch.
  • Whether the general free trial applies to Forever.
  • Whether the Collector's Edition or regional prices differ; no Blizzard page I opened gives them.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?

The Lore Forever add-on is free and fan-made; it adds quest and zone stories for levels 1 to 30 with no extra purchase. Willo is free to start with 50 answers a day and answers by voice; paid Willo plans exist, but this page quotes no prices. Neither is affiliated with Blizzard, and Willo can be wrong.
