Human or Skyborne Mage in WoW Forever: What Guides Say

Human or Skyborne Mage in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever): Warcraft Tavern's Mage guide names High Order Skyborne the best overall Alliance Mage race with Human and Gnome not far behind, while RankedBoost grades Human A and Skyborne B, as of November 6, 2026. Blizzard's November 2 notes, which repeat earlier racial announcements, list changed numbers for both races, so older reasoning may be out of date. WoW Forever launched on November 4, 2026.

Quick answer: Skyborne needs the Heroic Pack or higher (Blizzard). Warcraft Tavern prefers Skyborne; RankedBoost and MeinMMO lean Human (MeinMMO: Human for Fire, Skyborne for Frost). Blizzard cut Skyborne's Read Leyline to 50% regeneration unless you are attuned at a Ley Line, and Human's Ruthless to 1% crit.

Human versus High Order Skyborne Mage as of Blizzard's November 2 notes: Human has Ruthless 1% crit, Human Spirit 10% Spirit and Will to Survive; Skyborne has Wind Blessed 2% haste, Read Leyline 50% regeneration for 15 seconds, or 100% when attuned at a Ley Line, and Elemental Insight; Skyborne requires the Heroic Pack or higher.
Human and High Order Skyborne Mage racials per Blizzard's November 2 notes and the starter guide, as of November 6, 2026.

Key facts

  • Both can be Mages: Human and Alliance High-Order Skyborne are on Blizzard's Mage list (September 22); Horde Windshaper Skyborne cannot be Mages
  • Skyborne access: requires the Heroic Pack or higher, and Skyborne start on Zephras Isle (Blizzard Starter Guide)
  • Human racials: Ruthless, The Human Spirit, Will to Survive, Perception (Warcraft Tavern)
  • Skyborne racials: Walk on Air, Read Ley Line, Wind Blessed, Elemental Insight (Warcraft Tavern)

What do Blizzard's November 2 notes say about each race?

Blizzard's development notes, which repeat racial updates posted earlier, say Human's Ruthless now gives 1% crit (was 2%) and Human Spirit gives 10% Spirit (was 5%). For Skyborne, Wind-Blessed haste fell to 2% (was 3%). Read Leyline now raises Mana and Health regeneration by 50% for 15 seconds (was 100%). Using it at a Ley Line also grants Attuned for 1 hour, which restores the 100% effect, persists through death and is removed on entering a raid. It cannot be used while Innervate is active. Treat guides written before these changes with care.

What do the guides say about Human?

Warcraft Tavern's Mage guide (undated) calls Human not far behind Skyborne, praising the 1% crit, a stun break that helps when Blink is on cooldown and Spirit for long fights. RankedBoost (graded September 24) gives Human an A, noting Blink already covers part of the stun-break job. MeinMMO (October 28) picks Human for Fire in PvE and says the name-reservation screens it used did not yet include some racial adjustments.

What do the guides say about Skyborne?

Warcraft Tavern's guide says Skyborne is the best overall Alliance option, crediting Mana regeneration and haste, with Wind Blessed useful for every specialization and Read Ley Line strong but dependent on how many Ley Lines are nearby. RankedBoost grades High Order Skyborne B because it has no damage cooldown, which it gives as the main reason it sits below Orc. MeinMMO suggests Skyborne for Frost in PvE. RankedBoost's grades date from September 24.

Is a third race worth considering?

Gnome is the other Alliance Mage race, which RankedBoost grades S. See Gnome or Human Mage, where Eureka and Escape Artist are discussed, and best race for Mage. For the purchase question, see is Skyborne worth it and how to unlock Skyborne.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Current grades: none of the outlets I opened says it re-graded after the November 2 notes
  • Warcraft Tavern's ranking: its page has no date, and our Gnome or Human page reports Warcraft Tavern favoring Gnome from its racials pages; its Mage guide read on November 6 names Skyborne first
  • Raid effect: Attuned is removed on entering a raid (Blizzard), but raids open December 9 and no guide covers it yet
  • Levels 31 to 60: the beta capped at level 30

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?

Ask Willo out loud, for example "what does Read Leyline do", and compare her answer with the in-game tooltip. She can be wrong and is not official. Willo is free to start with 50 answers a day and is a separate companion app for Windows 10 or 11 and Apple Silicon Macs (macOS 12 or later), per her page; her FAQ and the Lore Forever FAQ say Windows and Mac, though CurseForge still calls her a Windows app. The free Lore Forever add-on adds quest and place stories for Zephras Isle and beyond. It has no internet access and its narration uses generated voices. Both are fan-made and not affiliated with Blizzard. See also the Mage guide.
