Gnome or Human Mage in WoW Forever: What Guides Say

Gnome or Human Mage in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever): most guides I opened lean Gnome, and none names Human the overall Mage pick, but the sources disagree on how much crit Human gets. Both races can be Mages according to Blizzard, and WoW Forever launched on November 4, 2026. This is a two-race follow-up to the best race for Mage guide.

Quick answer: Warcraft Tavern and RankedBoost favor Gnome for Eureka, 5% more Mana and Escape Artist; TimeSaver names Gnome or Human. Human offers a small crit bonus, 10% more Spirit and Will to Survive, a stun break. MeinMMO splits by specialization. Racial values changed during the beta, so check the in-game tooltip.

Gnome versus Human Mage in WoW Forever as guides describe them: Gnome has Eureka (10% more damage for 8 seconds with reduced costs), Expansive Mind (5% Mana) and Escape Artist; Human has Ruthless (1% crit per Warcraft Tavern's racials page, 2% on its Mage page), Human Spirit (10% Spirit) and Will to Survive. RankedBoost grades Gnome S and Human A.

Key facts

  • Both can be Mages: Human and Gnome are on Blizzard's Mage list (September 22)
  • RankedBoost: Gnome S, Human A (graded September 24; page footer shows November 4)
  • Warcraft Tavern: Gnome is the best overall Alliance option for Mage
  • TimeSaver (October 18, updated October 29): names Gnome or Human for Alliance and cites Gnome's Eureka and 5% more Mana
  • MeinMMO (October 28): PvE Human for Fire, Gnome for Arcane; PvP Gnome and Human

What does a Gnome Mage get?

Warcraft Tavern's Gnome racials page lists Eureka, a new racial that reduces resource costs for damaging and healing abilities and adds 10% damage or healing for 8 seconds; Expansive Mind, +5% Mana; Escape Artist, which removes movement-impairing effects and grants 3 seconds of immunity; and an Engineering effect. RankedBoost's reasoning is that these feed a Mage's Mana bar and break roots and slows. The page gives no change dates, and MeinMMO notes Eureka gives efficient damage phases.

What does a Human Mage get?

Warcraft Tavern's Human page lists Ruthless (1% crit on all abilities), The Human Spirit (10% Spirit), Will to Survive (removes stuns) and Perception (detects stealth). It says Sword and Mace Specialization were replaced by Will to Survive and Ruthless. TimeSaver says Ruthless was cut from 2% to 1% crit while Human Spirit rose to 10%, and calls Human's offer small. Gamer Guides (updated October 18) rates Human Mage Solid, its third tier.

Where do the guides disagree?

On numbers, first: Warcraft Tavern's Human page calls the 10% Spirit unchanged from the original, while TimeSaver says it rose to 10%. On crit, Warcraft Tavern's Mage guide (undated) says Human can be stronger depending on specialization "due to the 2% Spell Crit," while its own Human racials page and TimeSaver say 1%. I could not tell which is current. Next, on specialization: MeinMMO (October 28) picks Human for Fire and Gnome for Arcane in PvE, and says that during name reservation the character creation screen did not yet include the latest racial changes. RankedBoost and Warcraft Tavern put Gnome ahead overall, and Warcraft Tavern calls Escape Artist massive for PvP while Will to Survive helps when Blink is on cooldown.

Is there a third option?

High Order Skyborne can also be Mages (Blizzard) and need the Heroic Pack or higher. RankedBoost grades them B; MeinMMO suggests Skyborne for Frost. See Skyborne classes by faction.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Which racial values are live now; every number above comes from beta-era or pre-launch pages, and the in-game tooltip is the source of truth.
  • Ruthless at 1% or 2%, and whether Human Spirit is new.
  • Eureka and Expansive Mind beyond the beta cap of level 30; the launch cap is 60.
  • Whether any source measured the difference; the guides give opinions, not simulations.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?

The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable and recorded stories for the places you cross, with narrators that are generated voices; it has no internet access and does not change your Mage's stats. Willo is a separate companion app, free to start with 50 answers a day. She can be wrong and is not official, so ask her to explain a racial and then check the tooltip. Willo's page lists a Windows 10 or 11 download and an Apple Silicon Mac download (macOS 12 or later), and her FAQ and the Lore Forever FAQ say Windows and Mac, though CurseForge still calls her a Windows app. Both are fan-made and not affiliated with Blizzard.
