Best Race for Mage in WoW Forever: Six Races, Guides Compared

Six of the nine races can play a Mage in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever): Human, Gnome and High Order Skyborne for the Alliance, and Orc, Troll and Undead for the Horde, according to Blizzard. All seven sources we read put Gnome among their Alliance picks, the Horde pick is contested, and Orc Mage is new.

Quick answer: Every source puts Gnome among its Alliance picks, with Human and Skyborne as alternatives. On the Horde, Warcraft Tavern, GamerBlurb, Gamer Guides and GamesFuze name Orc, RankedBoost grades Undead S, and TimeSaver (October 29) calls Orc the weakest Horde Mage.

A Mage trades in patience and the right spell at the right moment, and the race beneath the robe changes little of that.

Which races can be a Mage in WoW Forever?

Blizzard's tables list Gnome, Human and High Order Skyborne for the Alliance and Orc, Troll and Undead for the Horde, and Blizzard's post says the Alliance-aligned High Order Skyborne can become Mages. Method puts Skyborne Mages on the Alliance side. Warcraft Tavern's class overview and Gfinity agree with Blizzard. See the race and class combinations guide, the Mage guide and the Skyborne classes by faction page.

Which Alliance race do guides pick for a Mage?

Three Alliance races qualify, and one name is on every list.

  • RankedBoost (updated October 17): Gnome S, Human A, High Order Skyborne B.
  • GamerBlurb (October 18): Gnome; Skyborne as an alternative for smoother leveling.
  • Gamer Guides (updated October 18): Gnome "Best pick"; Human and High Order Skyborne "Solid".
  • GamesFuze (September 24): Gnome, "the perfect choice".
  • mein-mmo (October 28): for PvE, Human for Fire, Gnome for Arcane and Skyborne for Frost; Gnome and Human for PvP.

Three Horde races qualify, and the guides disagree.

  • RankedBoost: Undead S; Orc and Troll A.
  • GamerBlurb: Orc, with Troll competitive for cast-heavy builds.
  • Gamer Guides: Orc and Troll "Best pick"; Undead "Strong".
  • GamesFuze: Orc, calling the new Orc Mage S tier.
  • mein-mmo: Orc and Troll for PvE; Undead for PvP.
  • TimeSaver: Undead or Troll; Orc is the weakest Horde pick.
  • Warcraft Tavern: Orc "by far the best Horde option", Troll "very close", Undead partly chance-based.

Warcraft Tavern's and GamerBlurb's reasoning for Orc cites Savage, which Warcraft Tavern reports was removed on October 26. TimeSaver (October 29) is newer than both.

What do the Mage-relevant racials do?

Warcraft Tavern's racial pages and reports give the numbers. Gnome Eureka is an 8-second buff after October 16, with 10% more damage and reduced resource costs; Expansive Mind adds 5% Mana. Orc Blood Fury grants Spell Power, on a 2-minute cooldown after October 27. Troll Berserking gives 10% attack speed and spell haste, lasting 15 seconds after October 27. mein-mmo calls racial advantages very small and suggests choosing for looks unless you are a min-maxer. See racials explained.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Whether the October 26 and 27 values are live on November 4; mein-mmo's October 28 article says the character creation screen did not yet show them.
  • Eureka: Gamer Guides' racials page lists 50% less Mana for Mages but describes the older "next three abilities" form, while Warcraft Tavern says Eureka is now an 8-second buff.
  • Mage performance beyond level 30, since the beta ended there; the launch cap is 60.
