WoW Forever Mage Beginner Guide: Frost, Fire, Arcane and Leveling
The Mage is a ranged spellcaster with three damage styles, crowd control and free food and water, and Warcraft Tavern's beta guide says its leveling is strong. You trade health for power: you hit hard from range but run out of mana, so crowd control and mana habits matter more than gear. Teleports arrive at level 20 and portals at level 40.
Quick answer: Pick Frost if you want slows and safety, Fire for burst and critical hits, or Arcane for short bursts of heavy damage. Learn Polymorph and Blink early, use your wand while mana regenerates, and remember the five-second rule.

Who can be a Mage
Mages are available to Human, Gnome, High Order Skyborne, Orc, Troll and Undead characters. Orc Mage is a new combination in Forever, and Blizzard's introduction says High Order Skyborne can become Mages. See the race and class guide.
The three specializations
- Arcane: short, powerful burst windows built on Arcane Blast, plus Arcane Missiles procs from Missile Barrage. Both are new in Forever. Arcane Blast drains mana quickly, so use it on purpose.
- Fire: damage over time and frequent critical hits. Hotstreak, new in Forever, lets you cast Pyroblast in normal combat, with up to three stacks reducing its cast time.
- Frost: slows and freezes targets, then shatters them with critical hits using Frostbolt and Ice Lance. Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost are new in Forever. Warcraft Tavern says Frost has mostly been used for PvP and leveling.
Early on, alternate Arcane Blast with Fireball or Frostbolt until you get Missile Barrage.
Crowd control and defense
- Polymorph isolates a dangerous target.
- Blink can break Stun and Immobilize effects.
- Frost Nova helps with area pulls once you have Shatter.
- Improved Blizzard slows enemies by up to 40%.
Warcraft Tavern also notes that Fire's Impact talent keeps a 10% stun chance.
Mana: the rule that trips beginners
Your mana pool is limited, and Intellect increases it. Spirit regeneration stops for five seconds after you start casting, even instant spells. Mp5 ignores that rule, and comes from Blessing of Wisdom, the Mana Well camping object or rare gear. Arcane Meditation keeps some regeneration going while you cast.
A simple habit: when mana runs low, swap to a Wand and stop casting for five seconds to regenerate. Conjure Water and Conjure Food mean you rarely need to buy supplies.
Teleports, portals and utility
Teleports arrive at level 20 and portals at level 40. These are two of the Mage's best group services. Comprehension, learned at level 6, is part of the new Scrolls and Research system, and the Research tradeskill can produce Bundles of Scrolls in libraries.
Leveling tips
- Mages have strong leveling because of free food, teleports, damage and crowd control.
- Warcraft Tavern says grinding with Blizzard, Flamestrike and Arcane Explosion was reportedly tuned down in Forever, so do not rely on area grinding.
- Pull one enemy at a time. Polymorph a second one if it joins.
What is new in Forever
Arcane Blast, Missile Barrage, Hotstreak, Wake of Fire, Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost are all new, and Arcane Meditation scales up to 50%. Incineration moved to the top of the Fire tree. Fingers of Frost affects all spells.
What is still uncertain
Warcraft Tavern's guide is from the beta and says values will change. It does not explain the talent system or dual specialization, and it does not give a level 60 damage ranking, so we do not either. Check your class trainer in the live game.
Where to go next
If you are still choosing a class, our class comparison places the Mage as a pure caster option. For another ranged class, read the Hunter guide, and for an early route, see the first 10 levels checklist.
