WoW Forever Hunter Beginner Guide: Pets, Specs and Leveling

The Hunter is a ranged damage class that fights with a pet at its side, and Warcraft Tavern's class guide calls it one of the strongest classes for leveling. It cannot tank or heal, but your pet can tank in solo and small-group play. Learn the 8-yard dead zone and keep your pet alive, and you have the basics.

Quick answer: Hunters have three specializations (Beast Mastery, Marksmanship and Survival), the longest range of any class, and no stuns or interrupts. Aimed Shot arrives at level 20 for every Hunter. Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40.

Who can be a Hunter

Hunters are available to many races. On the Alliance: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf and High Order Skyborne (not Gnomes). On the Horde: Orc, Tauren, Troll and Windshaper Skyborne (not Undead). Human Hunter is new in Forever. See the race and class guide. Skyborne Hunters start on Zephras Isle, where the trainer is Tai'ree Farsight.

How a Hunter plays

  • Role: damage only, though your pet can tank in solo and small-group play
  • Range: the longest of any class. Ranged abilities do not work within 8 yards of an enemy, the "dead zone", so back away before you shoot.
  • No stuns or interrupts. You rely on traps, your pet and distance.
  • Traps can be placed only at your own location, work in combat and have a 30-second cooldown in Forever.

Pets

Pets are the Hunter's identity. In Forever:

  • Pets gain stats from your gear, and player buffs that increase their stats no longer work on them.
  • Every pet family can learn Bite or Claw, and Dive or Dash.
  • Each family has unique abilities, for example the Bear's Swipe hits three targets, the Wolf's Furious Howl boosts your party's melee Attack Power, the Cat's Prowl gives Stealth and bonus damage, and the Turtle's Shell Shield reduces damage taken for 12 seconds.
  • Foxes are a new family. Their Trickster's Dance raises dodge chance and attack speed for 12 seconds.
  • The Owl is now called the Bird of Prey.

A good beginner habit is to choose a pet for its role: a sturdy one like a bear or boar for solo questing, and a damage-oriented one when you run with a group.

The three specializations

  • Beast Mastery: pet-focused play. Talents include Focused Fire, which raises damage for you and your pet while the pet is active, and the new Summon Hawk.
  • Marksmanship: ranged attacks. Talents include Lethal Attacks, Careful Aim and the new Sniper Shot, a 4-second-cast shot.
  • Survival: traps and melee options. Talents include Survival Tactics, Predator's Edge and Lacerating Strikes, which makes Mongoose Bite cause a bleed.

Blizzard says talents keep the patch 1.12 structure with some changes. Talents and Legacy talents are changed at a class trainer in a major city. Beginners are usually fine in Beast Mastery, which leans on your pet, but any specialization can level.

Changes from Classic you should know

  • Aimed Shot becomes baseline at level 20.
  • Arcane Shot no longer shares a cooldown with Aimed Shot, and Multi-Shot now does.
  • Disengage reduces threat twice as much.
  • Aspect of the Beast now also grants melee Attack Power.
  • Frost and Fire traps have separate cooldowns.

Leveling tips

  1. Keep your pet on defensive or assist behavior while you learn its controls.
  2. Stay out of the dead zone: shoot, then step back, rather than fighting at melee range.
  3. Pull one enemy at a time before you know your tools.
  4. Visit your class trainer on every level. See the first 10 levels checklist.
  5. Pair a gathering profession such as Skinning with Leatherworking. See the professions guide.
  6. Hunters are strong for solo play, but dungeons are still worth it. Try an early dungeon at levels 13 to 20; see the dungeons guide.

Beginner pitfalls

  • Fighting at melee range with ranged abilities that cannot fire
  • Letting your pet die while you stand still
  • Forgetting traps work in combat now
  • Pulling several enemies before you know your escape tools
