How to Unlearn a Profession in WoW Forever: Red X and Cost
To unlearn a profession in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), open the Professions window and click the red X next to that profession's skill bar, then type the confirmation the game asks for. According to Warcraft Tavern's professions guide, this removes the skill and opens a profession slot, but you lose all progress. As of November 5, 2026, no source I opened states a gold or material cost.
Quick answer: Press K for the Professions window (Method), click the red X by the profession, confirm. You have two primary professions, so you must do this to take a third. Cooking, First Aid and Fishing cannot be unlearned.

Key facts
- Limit: two primary professions per character (Warcraft Tavern)
- Where: red X next to the profession's skill bar in the Professions window (Warcraft Tavern)
- Confirmation: the game asks you to type something so you do not lose progress by accident (Warcraft Tavern)
- Progress: lost; relearning means leveling again from the start (Warcraft Tavern)
- Cannot be unlearned: Cooking, First Aid and Fishing (Warcraft Tavern)
- Window key: K opens Professions and Tradeskills (Method, September 30)
How do you unlearn a profession in WoW Forever?
Warcraft Tavern's Forever guide says each character can hold only two primary professions, so learning a third means dropping one. Its steps are short: open the Professions window, click the red X beside the skill bar, then complete the confirmation. The guide says this "will remove the skill from your character and open up a profession slot." It shows no publication date.
Method's UI guide of September 30 says K opens Professions and Tradeskills. It does not mention unlearning, so the red X is one source (Warcraft Tavern) plus a beta forum thread. The exact menu wording may differ; check Esc > Options and the window itself.
Does unlearning cost gold, and do you lose your skill?
You lose the skill. Warcraft Tavern says that if you want the profession back you must level it "all over again," and the typed confirmation exists to stop accidents. The same page mentions no cost. I found no Blizzard page and no other Forever page that states one, so treat cost as unconfirmed rather than free. Before dropping a gathering trade, read the professions guide and best professions.
What if you cannot see the red X?
A Blizzard beta forum thread started September 25 reported the unlearn button missing from the Skills panel. By October 9 a player said it was still there as a one-pixel line that could be moused over and clicked. The workaround posted: press K, open the general Skills tab at the top rather than the character panel, and click the red X next to the profession's XP bar (one player found it by clicking the area beside it). No Blizzard staff replied, and I do not know whether launch fixed it. One player also posted a script command that removes a skill with no confirmation; I do not repeat it, because a slip costs the profession.
How did unlearning work in older WoW Classic?
For comparison only: GameRevolution's WoW Classic guide (no date) says to open the Skills tab, select the profession and click the small "Unlearn your Profession" icon, which erases your leveling progress; relearning starts at level 1. That describes the earlier Classic client, not WoW Forever.
What is not confirmed yet
- Any gold, material or level cost for unlearning.
- Whether the red X is still hard to see at launch.
- What happens to camp objects or Legacy talents tied to a profession you drop: see the camping guide and Legacy guide; neither says.
Can the Lore Forever add-on or Willo help?
When the menu is confusing, you can ask Willo, a separate companion app (Windows 10 or 11, with an Apple Silicon Mac download for macOS 12 or later on her page), out loud where the unlearn button is; she can answer from what she knows, but she can be wrong and cannot change settings or drop a profession for you, so the in-game window is the source of truth. She is free to start with 50 answers a day. The free Lore Forever add-on tells the story behind your quests. Both are fan-made, not affiliated with Blizzard.
