WoW Forever Professions Explained: Trainers, Skills and Pairings
In WoW Forever you can have two primary professions plus Cooking, First Aid and Fishing, and every profession tops out at skill 300. Skill grows through four tiers, each unlocked at a character level and taught by a trainer. This guide explains the system step by step. For which pairs to pick, see the best professions guide.
Quick answer: Pick two of nine primary professions. Learn gathering at level 1 and crafting at level 5. Advance through Apprentice, Journeyman (level 10), Expert (level 20) and Artisan (level 35). Orange recipes always raise your skill.

Primary and secondary professions
- Primary (two per character): Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Herbalism, Leatherworking, Mining, Skinning and Tailoring.
- Secondary (all three on every character): Cooking, First Aid and Fishing.
Warcraft Tavern notes that health potions are crafted through First Aid in Forever, not Alchemy. Treat that as beta information until you see it on a live trainer.
Where you learn them
Trainers in many towns and cities teach professions. A starting-zone quest also offers a choice of three rewards, each teaching a gathering profession (Mining, Skinning or Herbalism) and giving 2 skill points.
The four tiers
Each tier raises your maximum skill and needs a minimum character level.
- Apprentice: character level 1 for gathering, level 5 for crafting and secondary professions. Skill up to 75.
- Journeyman: level 10. Skill 50 to 150.
- Expert: level 20. Skill 125 to 225.
- Artisan: level 35. Skill 200 to 300, learned from special trainers. Secondary professions use a special quest instead.
The ranges overlap on purpose, so you never stall between tiers. Plan to visit a trainer each time you reach a new level gate.
Skill-up colors
Recipes are color-coded by how likely they are to raise your skill:
- Orange: a guaranteed skill-up
- Yellow: a good chance
- Green: a low chance
- Gray: no chance
Craft orange recipes first, then yellow. Do not spend materials on gray recipes.
What is new in Forever
- No passive bonuses. A profession's value comes from crafting, gathering and camping buffs, not from stat bonuses.
- A profession window. The default hotkey is K. It has filterable, searchable crafting menus, and recipes can be tracked in the objectives frame.
- A reagent bag slot. Reagent bags have their own slot, and more variants exist.
- 600 new recipes. Blizzard says there are more than 600 new recipes, most using vanilla materials.
- Racial perks. Gnomes (Engineering Specialization) reduce gadget backfires. Tauren (Cultivation) can gather herbs without Herbalism, and double the yield if they have it.
Professions and camping
Each profession has three tiers of campfire objects with a profession buff plus unique utility. Some, like the Fermenter, exist only in camping. Camp buffs do not stack with class buffs and are a little weaker: Warcraft Tavern's example is Blessing of Kings giving 10% stats against its camp equivalent at 8%. See the camping guide.
Professions also have a Legacy talent tree with account-wide perks such as Bountiful Harvest, Master Chef and Working Overtime. See the Legacy guide.
Unlearning a profession
You can remove a primary profession with the red X in the Professions window, which frees a slot. The game asks you to type a confirmation. If you learn the profession again later, you start from zero. Secondary professions cannot be unlearned.
Common mistakes
- Taking two crafting professions with no gatherer to feed them
- Dropping a profession you have leveled and losing all its progress
- Spending materials on gray or green recipes
- Forgetting to visit a trainer when you cross a level gate
- Expecting profession bonuses that no longer exist
Making money from professions
Prices will move at launch, so avoid any "best money-maker" list until the live auction house settles. The gold-making guide covers the fundamentals that do not change.
What is still uncertain
Warcraft Tavern expects profession specializations in Forever because some vanilla professions had them and Season of Discovery added more, but the guide says they are not confirmed. Two Legacy talents are also unidentified. Check these against the live game after November 4.
