Mount Hyjal

Mount Hyjal is the sacred mountain of the night elves in northern Kalimdor, crowned by the World Tree Nordrassil and the second Well of Eternity. In the last battle of the Third War, night elves, humans and orcs held its slopes against the Burning Legion until Archimonde fell at the World Tree's roots. The mountain still bears the scars, and the wounded tree still stands over the Well.

The Sacred Mountain

Ten thousand years ago, after the Great Sundering, Illidan Stormrage poured stolen waters of the first Well of Eternity into a lake atop Mount Hyjal, creating a second Well. To guard it, the Dragon Aspects raised the World Tree Nordrassil over its waters, and their blessings granted the night elves immortality and a deep bond with the Emerald Dream. For millennia the kaldorei watched over the mountain while their druids slept in the barrow dens beneath it.

The Battle of Mount Hyjal

During the Third War, the demon lord Archimonde marched up the mountain with the Scourge and the Burning Legion to drain the Well and destroy the World Tree. Jaina Proudmoore's human forces and Thrall's Horde set aside old hatreds to stand with Tyrande Whisperwind and Malfurion Stormrage, holding the slopes long enough for Malfurion to prepare a trap. When Archimonde reached Nordrassil, Malfurion sounded the Horn of Cenarius: thousands of wisps swarmed the demon, and the tree's stored power tore him apart. The victory cost the night elves their immortality and left Nordrassil scorched.

The Barrow Deeps and the Summit

Beneath the mountain lie the Barrow Deeps, an ancient cave system where the Druids of the Claw slept in their bear forms for thousands of years, until Malfurion woke them with the Horn of Cenarius to fight the Legion. Today the Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit, high on the mountain, are among the most perilous places on Kalimdor, fit only for great war bands of seasoned heroes.
