Burning Legion
The Burning Legion is an infinite, apocalyptic host of demons led by the fallen titan Sargeras, dedicated to scouring all life from creation. Having already shattered ancient Kalimdor ten thousand years ago, the demons remain Azeroth's most relentless nemesis, orchestrating the corruption of the orcs and the horrors of the Third War.
Genesis of the Host
Long ago, Sargeras stood as the champion of the titans, tasked with hunting down and imprisoning the demons that plagued the cosmos. Over countless ages of battling their evil, he grew disillusioned and concluded that creation itself was fatally flawed and must be unmade in flame. To enact his crusade, he freed the demons he had imprisoned, bending them to his will through fel magic. He augmented their chaos with the intellect of the corrupted eredar—elevating Archimonde and Kil'jaeden as his chief lieutenants—and forged an unstoppable engine of cosmic annihilation.
The War of the Ancients
Ten millennia ago, the reckless sorceries of the Highborne drew the Legion's gaze to Azeroth. Whispering through the Well of Eternity, Sargeras seduced Queen Azshara and her councilor Xavius with promises of reshaping the world into paradise. Instead, the portal unleashed commanders like Mannoroth and Archimonde alongside swarms of doomguard, felhounds, and flaming infernals. The ensuing war reduced Kalimdor's civilization to ruin before an alliance of night elves, dragonflights, and demigods collapsed the gateway. The catastrophic implosion tore the supercontinent apart in the Great Sundering, casting the ruined lands across vast new seas.
Shadows over Azeroth
Though cast back into the Twisting Nether, the Legion never abandoned Azeroth. Deciding that direct invasion invited failure, Kil'jaeden orchestrated proxy cataclysms from afar. The deceiver bound the orcs of Draenor through demonic blood pacts, sending the Horde charging through the Dark Portal to weaken mortal defenses. When that failed, the Legion forged the Lich King and unleashed the undead Scourge across Lordaeron, paving the way for Archimonde's return in the Third War. Even after Archimonde fell at Mount Hyjal, remnants of the Legion linger across Felwood, the Blasted Lands, and hidden cults throughout the world.
