Night elf

Millennia ago, an inquisitive nocturnal tribe gathered around the shores of the Well of Eternity, a vast font of raw arcane energy. Over generations, the Well's cosmic magic transformed them into tall, violet-skinned, long-lived beings who called themselves the kaldorei—'children of the stars.' Guiding their early society were the moon goddess Elune and the forest demigod Cenarius, who nurtured their deep connection to the living wilds of Kalimdor.

As centuries passed, the ruling caste—the Highborne, led by Queen Azshara—became obsessed with unlocking the Well's infinite arcane secrets. Their reckless use of sorcery built breathtaking wonders, but it ultimately caught the attention of the Burning Legion. The ensuing demonic invasion ended in the Great Sundering: the Well imploded, shattering ancient Kalimdor into fragmented continents and destroying Azshara's realm. Horrified by the calamity, the surviving kaldorei strictly outlawed arcane magic under penalty of death or exile.

For ten thousand years, the night elves retreated into seclusion. Druids slumbered in the Emerald Dream to heal the world while the Priestesses of Elune and Sentinels stood guard over Kalimdor's woodlands beneath the World Tree Nordrassil. This isolation ended during the Third War when the Legion returned to attack Mount Hyjal. The kaldorei sacrificed their immortality to defeat Archimonde. Now, led by High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind and Archdruid Fandral Staghelm, the night elves dwell in their young World Tree, Teldrassil, and fight alongside the Alliance to safeguard Ashenvale.
