The Deadmines

The story

Deep beneath the dusty farm town of Moonbrook lies the Deadmines, an enormous subterranean complex that once supplied a third of Stormwind's gold reserves. Abandoned during the First War and long considered haunted, these labyrinthine tunnels have secretly been overtaken by the Defias Brotherhood as their ultimate staging ground. Here, Edwin VanCleef and his conscripted goblin engineers labor away from the eyes of the realm to build an engine of vengeance against the kingdom.

Before the First War, the Deadmines were celebrated as the greatest gold-producing center in human lands, financing the prosperity of Stormwind. When the Orcish Horde swept through the kingdom and razed the capital, the mines were hastily abandoned to the dark. During those turbulent years, legendary figures walked these depths: Sir Anduin Lothar was imprisoned by subterranean ogres for twenty months while recovering the sacred Tome of Divinity, and Warchief Blackhand's rebellious daughter Griselda fled into the lower passages alongside the ogre Turok before both met their ends. Believed to be cursed and populated only by shambling undead and lurking subterranean vermin, the depths lay untouched for decades.
