Threat and Aggro in WoW Forever: How Tanks Hold Enemies

Threat is the number an enemy keeps for each fighter in a battle, and aggro is the result: the enemy attacks whoever sits at the top, which in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) should be the tank. Warcraft Wiki's Threat page says damage adds one threat per point, and its Aggro page says a challenger must pass the target's threat by 10% in melee range or 30% outside it, but both pages are marked outdated and mention Burning Crusade and later play, and no Forever source I opened confirms those numbers.

Quick answer: Tanks build threat with stance, seals, forms and high-threat abilities, and taunt to snap a stray enemy back. Healers and damage dealers wait for the tank and use threat reducers such as Fade. Forever's built-in damage meter shows no threat (mein-mmo).

How an enemy picks its target, per Warcraft Wiki's Aggro page, which is marked outdated: the tank holds 100 percent of the threat, a melee challenger needs more than 110 percent and a challenger outside melee range more than 130 percent to take aggro, and a taunt forces the enemy to attack the taunter; not confirmed for WoW Forever.
The 110 and 130 percent rule from Warcraft Wiki's Aggro page.

Every monster in a dungeon keeps a ledger of grudges. A tank makes sure the biggest one is theirs.

Key facts

  • Threat table: starts at zero in combat; damage adds one threat per point (Warcraft Wiki, Threat; marked outdated)
  • Taking aggro: 10% more threat in melee range, 30% outside it (Warcraft Wiki, Aggro; marked outdated, unconfirmed for Forever)
  • Taunt ranges: Paladin Judgement 10 yards; Warrior Taunt and Druid Growl 5 yards (Blizzard)
  • Threat reducers doubled: Fade, Feint, Disengage and Cower (Blizzard; Warcraft Tavern; Kami Labs)
  • Threat meter: none built in; Details! adds one (mein-mmo)

What do threat and aggro mean?

Threat is the score and aggro is the state. Warcraft Wiki defines threat as "a measure of an NPC's aggression towards another unit," kept in a table for each enemy; a unit near the top of the table is usually the target, which in game is called having aggro. Entries start at zero and reset when you re-enter combat.

How does a challenger take aggro from the tank?

By passing the tank's threat, or by taunting. According to Warcraft Wiki's Aggro page, an outdated page, an enemy switches targets when someone exceeds the current target's threat by 10% in melee range or 30% outside it. A taunt forces the enemy to focus on you for a short time regardless of threat, says the wiki's Taunt page, and the Aggro page adds that it also lifts your threat to the holder's level, though taunts worked differently before the Burning Crusade. Blizzard's Paladin notes say Swift Judgement lets Paladin tanks react to a resisted taunt, which implies taunts can be resisted in Forever.

What do tanks use to hold threat in WoW Forever?

Each tank class has its own tools.

  • Warrior: Defensive Stance adds 30% threat (wow.gg). Blizzard says Sunder Armor's threat now scales with Attack Power.
  • Paladin: Gfinity calls Righteous Fury mandatory, though Blizzard reduced its threat bonus. Seal of Fury's Judgement taunts, and Blizzard says Consecration reliably makes threat on only four targets.
  • Druid: Kami Labs, relaying Blizzard, says Primal Bite makes very high threat, Lacerate high threat.
  • Others: Blizzard says Enhancement Shaman can generate high threat as a temporary tank. Warcraft Tavern reports that the Warlock's Voidwalker gains extra threat and the Imp does not.

How do healers and damage dealers lower their threat?

By waiting and by using reducers. mein-mmo says healers and damage dealers should hold back until the tank has had a moment to build threat. Blizzard says Fade's threat reduction was doubled; Warcraft Tavern, relaying Blizzard, says the same of Feint; Kami Labs says Disengage and Cower were doubled. Warcraft Tavern says Divine Shield and Blessing of Protection remove a Paladin from threat tables. Warcraft Wiki's outdated Threat page says healing makes threat, so healers can draw aggro by healing.

How can you see threat in WoW Forever?

With an add-on. mein-mmo's October 26 add-on guide says Forever's own damage meter has no threat display and that Details! includes a mod called Tiny Threat. CurseForge lists ForeverThreat, an Omen-style threat meter for the 1.60.1 client, updated October 29, 2026. See best add-ons.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Whether Forever uses the 10% and 30% margins or the half-healing rule; both come from Warcraft Wiki pages marked outdated.
  • Levels 31 to 60: the beta ended at level 30, and the launch cap is 60.
