Best Tank in WoW Forever: Paladin Tops 2 of 4 Rankings

Two of the four tank rankings I could open for World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) put Protection Paladin first: NoobToBoss and RankedBoost both rate it S tier, ahead of Protection Warrior and Feral Druid. SeeMeta's raid list rates Protection Warrior S instead, a MythicSim threat simulation published by Kami Labs puts the Druid first, and MeinMMO calls the Warrior the best main tank. All were made on a beta capped at level 30.

Quick answer: Three classes tank: Warrior, Paladin and Druid. NoobToBoss and RankedBoost favor Protection Paladin with Protection Warrior second; SeeMeta (raids) reverses that. WoW Forever launches November 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST (Blizzard) with a level 60 cap.

Tank tiers from three sources: Protection Paladin is S tier at NoobToBoss and RankedBoost, Protection Warrior is A at both, and Feral Druid is B at both; SeeMeta's raid list rates Protection Warrior S and Protection Paladin and Feral Druid A; MeinMMO calls the Warrior the best main tank and the Paladin the likely best against several enemies at once.
Tank spec tiers from NoobToBoss, RankedBoost and SeeMeta (raid), plus other views. Beta rankings, as of October 29, 2026.

The tank walks in first, and everything that follows depends on how well the first blow lands. Shield, plate or fur, the tank stands between the group and the pack.

Key facts

  • NoobToBoss (October 19): Protection Paladin S, Protection Warrior A, Feral Bear Druid B; all three handle beta dungeon content
  • RankedBoost (updated October 17): the same order; Feral Combat Druid moved up from C
  • SeeMeta (October 16, raid tiers): Protection Warrior S; Protection Paladin and Feral Combat Druid A
  • Taunt range: the Paladin's Judgement taunt reaches 10 yards, against 5 for Warrior Taunt and Druid Growl (Blizzard)
  • Tank classes: Warrior, Paladin and Druid; Warcraft Tavern says Enhancement Shaman can tank in a pinch

Which class do the tier lists rank as the best tank?

Protection Paladin, on NoobToBoss and RankedBoost. NoobToBoss calls Protection Paladin the strongest all-round tank in the beta, crediting a long-range taunt, strong pack threat and useful defensive tools; its Seal of Fury adds Holy damage to melee attacks. RankedBoost grades Protection Warrior A and Feral Combat Druid B, and says it weighs threat first, then mitigation, then cooldowns.

Blizzard's October 15 class deep dive describes the Paladin tools: Seal of Fury, whose Judgement taunts from 10 yards (Growl and Taunt reach 5), and Templar's Bulwark, an absorb equal to 100% of maximum health for 8 seconds on a 5-minute cooldown. Warcraft Tavern's Paladin guide adds a limit: Paladins have no gap closer, no proper slow and no movement speed increase, and Hammer of Justice is as far as crowd control goes.

What do the Warrior and the Druid bring?

Protection Warrior is the classic shield tank. Warcraft Tavern says it is the most basic type of tank, with strong cooldowns like Shield Wall and Last Stand, but low on Rage if you are not being hit. NoobToBoss says Shield Slam only arrives at level 40, so threat is less dominant at the beta cap.

Feral Druid tanks in Bear Form. Warcraft Tavern says bears have large health pools and strong threat from Primal Bite, but less mitigation than other tanks and no Block or Parry, and ferals are commonly used as off-tanks. NoobToBoss says Dire Bear Form arrives at level 40 and Lacerate at 42.

Where do the sources disagree on the best tank?

MeinMMO's Warrior page, dated October 22, calls the Warrior the best main tank and a solid off-tank, while its Paladin page says Protection Paladins are likely the best tanks against several enemies at once. Kami Labs, in an October 21 opinion piece, says tank Warriors will be incredible in dungeons and calls Protection Paladin one of the best dungeon tanks.

Two more rankings point a different way. SeeMeta's tier list covers raids only, was updated October 16, and rates Protection Warrior S and Protection Paladin and Feral Combat Druid A. Kami Labs also republishes a MythicSim simulation, checked October 28, that ranks tanks by threat alone on a 2-minute single-target fight: the Druid (listed as Guardian) 1,634 threat per second, Protection Warrior 1,402 and Protection Paladin 1,099, and warns the order can move on several targets or longer fights. NoobToBoss's own Warrior entry reads "Best for predictable boss tanking." So the split is partly by encounter. See Tanks and healers, the Warrior guide, the Paladin guide and dungeon groups.

What is not confirmed yet

  • The beta stopped at level 30. NoobToBoss says nobody has tested raid tanking, and that deeper talents for Warriors and Druids could narrow the gap with Protection Paladin.
  • The Shield Slam, Dire Bear Form and Lacerate levels come from NoobToBoss alone.
  • SeeMeta covers raids and the simulation measures threat only, so the four rankings are not measuring the same thing.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?

The free Lore Forever add-on links a primer when you enter a dungeon it covers, with the overview, why you are there and the bosses in order, and adds a Lore button to quests and recorded narration for each zone. Willo, a Windows companion app, lets you ask out loud and hear the answer, talk to the characters you target, and keep a notebook of to-dos for each character. She is free to start with 50 answers a day, works without the add-on, and can be wrong.
