WoW Forever Tanks and Healers Explained: Who Fills Which Role
Three classes tank in WoW Forever (Warrior, Paladin and Druid) and four heal (Priest, Paladin, Druid and Shaman), with the Paladin the biggest change from WoW Classic. Blizzard says Paladins can be "highly effective tanks," and a Paladin or Druid can switch roles more easily than a Warrior or Priest. This guide explains each role, what each class brings and how groups form without an automatic finder.
Quick answer: Tanks: Warrior (shield and Defensive Stance), Paladin (Protection, with the new Seal of Fury) and Druid (Bear Form). Healers: Priest, Paladin (Holy), Druid (Restoration) and Shaman (Restoration). Pick the role you enjoy, because there is no group finder to fill gaps for you.

What a tank and a healer do
A tank takes the enemy's attention (threat) so teammates are not hit, and survives the damage that follows. A healer keeps everyone alive and manages mana. Your remaining teammates are damage dealers. Most Warcraft group content in the Classic tradition is built around these three roles, and our dungeons overview lists where you will meet them first.
The tank classes
Warrior (Protection)
The Warrior tanks in Defensive Stance with a shield. Warcraft Tavern's beta guide lists Master of Defense, Toughness and Last Stand as key Protection talents, and a level 30 build that includes Vanguard, which lets you Charge without changing stance. Rage builds as you take and deal damage, and Warcraft Tavern says Rage generation is currently low. Read the Warrior guide for the full class.
Paladin (Protection)
Blizzard's Paladin deep dive describes the biggest tank change. Seal of Fury (learned at level 10) adds a Holy bonus to each melee swing, so fast weapons suit tanking, and it grants an absorb worth half of that damage. Its Judgement acts as a taunt with a 10-yard range, versus 5 yards for Druid Growl and Warrior Taunt. Other tools Blizzard lists include Templar's Bulwark, an absorb equal to 100% of maximum health for 8 seconds on a 5-minute cooldown, and Swift Judgement, which resets the Judgement cooldown and makes the next Judgement free.
Warcraft Tavern says Seal of Fury's taunt is the only taunt a Paladin has in Forever and warns that Paladins have no gap closer, no real slow and limited crowd control. Blizzard notes that a few issues with Reckoning were known and fixes were planned. See the Paladin guide.
Druid (Feral Bear)
Bear Form is learned by quest at level 10 in Forever, adds a Rage bar, and raises armor and health. Warcraft Tavern lists new tools, Primal Bite for threat and Lacerate for a stacking bleed. Druids cannot Block or Parry, so they rely on Dodge and armor, and Feral Swiftness now boosts Dodge in every form. The guide says it is not yet known how each build performs at endgame. See the Druid guide.
A note on Shaman
Warcraft Tavern says Enhancement Shaman shows tank potential, since Earth Shock and Rockbiter Weapon generate threat, but it doubts the survivability talents are enough for end-game dungeons yet. Treat Shaman as a healer or damage class for now.
The healer classes
- Priest: Warcraft Tavern says Holy "excels at every healing role it is given," with Prayer of Mending as its capstone, and that Discipline depends on fight length. The guide gives no dungeon-specific advice. Its healer stat priority is Healing Power, then Intellect, MP5, Spirit and Critical Strike. Gnomes can now be Priests.
- Paladin (Holy): Blizzard calls Paladins "the strongest single-target healers in the game" while noting group healing needs more planning. Holy Shock moves to a 21-point talent with its cooldown cut from 30 to 10 seconds.
- Druid (Restoration): HoTs (heals over time) now stack and can crit, Wild Growth is a new area HoT, and Revive gives an out-of-combat resurrection.
- Shaman (Restoration): strong at group healing, with Chain Heal, Riptide and Mana Tide Totem. Warcraft Tavern notes few instant heals, so haste is valued, and no Bloodlust or Hex exists in Forever.
Forming a dungeon group
Warcraft Tavern reports from the BlizzCon demo that WoW Forever has no modern dungeon finder and has the Classic-style Looking For Group window, which helps you organize a group but does not form it automatically or teleport anyone. Meeting stones do not work, and the only summon is the Warlock's Ritual of Summoning, which needs two extra party members at the entrance. In practice this means:
- Everyone usually has to travel to the dungeon, so plan the trip.
- Announce your role when you ask for a group, since the window will not match people for you.
- Dungeon groups must share a faction, so see Alliance versus Horde.
Choosing your role
If you want options, Paladin and Druid are the most flexible. If you want the simplest healer role, Priest is the clearest. If you enjoy a classic shield-and-Rage tank, play Warrior. Our class comparison for beginners and solo class guide cover leveling alone before you group up. The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made and adds background to the dungeons you enter.
