WoW Forever Paladin Beginner Guide: Holy, Protection, Retribution
The Paladin is a plate-wearing holy warrior with seals, blessings and auras, and in Forever it can tank as well as heal and deal damage. Undead Paladins are new, so both factions can now field the class. Warcraft Tavern says Protection and Retribution both level well, and recommends spending early points in Retribution even if you plan to tank.
Quick answer: Keep a Seal up before every pull, start Judgement as you run in, then use Holy Strike, and keep both on cooldown. Level as Retribution or Protection. Carry mana potions, since chain-pulling drains mana. Human is the clear pick on the Alliance, and Undead is the only Horde option.

Who can be a Paladin
Paladins are available to Human, Dwarf and Undead characters. Undead Paladin is new in Forever, and it gives the Horde a Paladin option. See the race and class guide.
Warcraft Tavern says Human is the clear Alliance pick because its weapon specialization gives twice the critical strike of the Dwarf's. It notes Dwarf's Stoneform is now a flat 10% physical damage reduction, which it calls very good for tanking, and that the Undead's Touch of the Grave is the main draw but its power is uncertain until later levels. These are community opinions.
The three specializations
- Holy: a healer built on large, bursty heals. It rotates Holy Shock, Flash of Light and Holy Light with Infusion of Light. A damage version, "Shockadin", is uncertain, and the guide says it will be a long time before it is confirmed to work.
- Protection: now a functional tank. Seal of Fury provides a real taunt and Templar's Bulwark is a strong defensive cooldown.
- Retribution: melee damage. Champion of the Light lets Spell Power scale with Intellect, and the capstone Twist of Light is a simplified seal twist that lets you hit with two seals at once.
Seals, blessings and auras
- Seals are 30-second offensive buffs, and Judgement triggers a secondary effect. Seal of Righteousness deals Holy damage on swings and Judgement. Seal of Fury, new in Forever, adds Holy damage and an absorb shield, and Judgement taunts. Seal of Command is a Retribution talent that suits slow two-handers. In Forever, Judgement no longer consumes your Seal.
- Blessings last one hour each, instead of five minutes. Named options are Might, Wisdom, Kings and Light. Blessing of Salvation is removed and replaced by Salvation and Revoke.
- Auras are set before a fight rather than swapped mid-fight. Devotion Aura is learned first, with Retribution Aura and Concentration Aura among the options.
Key spells by level
Warcraft Tavern's leveling guide lists:
- Level 1: Seal of Righteousness, Holy Light
- Level 4: Blessing of Might, Judgement
- Level 6: Holy Strike, Divine Protection
- Level 8: Hammer of Justice
- Level 10: Blessing of Protection, Lay on Hands, Seal of Fury
- Level 12: Redemption (class quest)
- Level 16: Retribution Aura, Righteous Fury
- Level 20: Consecration, Exorcism, Flash of Light, Blessing of Kings, Polearms
- Level 32: Divine Shield
- Level 44: Hammer of Wrath
Plate armor comes from the class trainer at level 40. Before that you wear cloth, leather and mail, and Paladins carry shields and Librams.
A simple leveling routine
- Put up Seal of Righteousness before you pull. Protection uses Seal of Fury.
- Start Judgement while running in, then use Holy Strike.
- Keep Judgement and Holy Strike on cooldown and refresh your Seal as needed.
- Add Consecration once you are in melee, especially on group pulls.
- When in trouble, cast Divine Protection or Blessing of Protection on yourself, then heal with Holy Light. Lay on Hands heals you fully but uses all your mana, so spend it carefully.
Judge Seal of Justice to stop enemies running away in tight spaces. Retribution can switch to Seal of Command at level 20 or later, though with a one-hander or high Spell Power, Seal of Righteousness is still recommended. Eat cooked food for the experience buff.
Strengths and weaknesses
The guide lists strong group utility through blessings, auras, Freedom and Protection, plus high burst and reliable area damage from Consecration. The weaknesses are the lack of a gap closer, slow or speed boost, and crowd control limited to Hammer of Justice.
Warcraft Tavern also recommends Blacksmithing, Alchemy and Engineering. See professions. The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made and does not change class play.
What is still uncertain
The beta builds assume 5 Legacy points in Talented and are capped at level 30, with level 60 builds due at launch. The guide says it is "too early" to judge end-game balance, that stat priorities will be added later, and that Holy Shock as a damage spec is unproven. See the Legacy guide.
