WoW Forever Talents Explained: First Builds and Respec Basics
In WoW Forever you spend talent points in three class trees, and your first point arrives at level 10 unless the Talented Legacy perk lets you start earlier. You can unlearn them at your class trainer for a gold fee that rises with each respec. Most of the numbers below come from the beta, which stopped at level 30, so builds for levels 31 to 60 are untested.
Quick answer: Each class has three talent trees. Points start at level 10 (level 9 with the first rank of Talented, as low as level 5 with all five). Respec at your class trainer: about 1 gold, then 5, rising to a 50 gold cap, though the beta made it nearly free. Level 60 builds were not testable in the beta.

The basics
- Three trees per class. For example, Warrior has Arms, Fury and Protection, Paladin has Holy, Protection and Retribution, and Mage has Arcane, Fire and Frost. Trees are class-specific.
- A 51 point cap. Warcraft Tavern's Legacy page says the total stays capped at 51 talent points, and the Talented perk adds no extra points.
- Nothing to spend before the first point. Warcraft Tavern's Mage leveling guide says its early build uses no talents until level 10, then you spend points on your chosen spec.
When do you get your first talent point?
The sources agree on the shape and differ on the details:
- Default: level 10, as Warcraft Tavern's Mage guide describes.
- With Talented: Blizzard's Legacy overview says Talented "allows players to unlock talent points up to 5 levels lower than normal". Warcraft Tavern's beta page says the first rank moves your first point from level 10 to 9 and lists five ranks, which would bring it to level 5.
- Conflict: one guide says Talented starts points at level 9, another at level 5. Both fit a five-rank perk. Blizzard has not published the rank costs.
Icy Veins says a level 30 character can earn up to 5 more points with Talented, with a beta cap of 26. That fits one point per level from level 10, which would be 21 points at level 30 without the perk. That is our arithmetic, not a source quote.
The Legacy side
Talented is a perk in the Adventure tree of the Legacy system. Blizzard says each completed Legacy Challenge earns one Legacy Point, points are Battle.net account-wide, and each character spends up to 16 points at launch. See the Legacy system guide. Warcraft Tavern's Mage guide also notes that its talent levels assume you have not used Talented.
How talent rows unlock
In Warcraft Tavern's Mage listing, talents unlock in steps of five levels. Frost, for example, gets Improved Frostbolt at 10, Frostbite and Ice Shards at 15, Ice Lance and Frost Channeling at 20, Shatter and Ice Block at 25, Cold Snap and Fingers of Frost at 30, Winter's Chill at 35 and Ice Barrier at 40. Arcane and Fire follow the same rhythm. The list shows the earliest level without Talented.
Talents also change between patches. The level 30 beta update, for instance, gave Druids a new Feral talent, Shifting Power, and renamed the Mage's Hot Streak to Heating Up. Check your class guide for current names. Our class pages cover the Mage, Warlock and Hunter, and the other classes are compared in the class comparison.
Respeccing at your class trainer
- Go to your class trainer in a capital city of a race that can play your class.
- Talk to the trainer.
- Choose "I wish to unlearn my class or legacy talents", confirm the cost and your points are refunded.
Allthings.how lists these costs, and notes they may change:
- First talent respec: 1 gold
- Second respec: 5 gold
- Later respecs: rise each time, up to a 50 gold cap
- Legacy respec: 10 gold at the time of writing
During the beta, Icy Veins says the lowest respec cost was 1 silver and dropped by one respec per hour, and that the cost will change at launch on November 4.
Dual specialization
Warcraft Tavern's Mage guide lists "Dual Talent Specialization" at level 40 as a class trainer proficiency. Allthings.how says dual specializations are expected later, could cost extra and are not confirmed. No cost has been published, so do not budget gold for it yet.
What was not tested
- Levels 31 to 60. The beta cap was 30. Overgear says full 1 to 60 talent paths "cannot be tested yet".
- Level 60 builds. Warcraft Tavern says they will be added at launch.
- Unofficial calculators. Third-party talent sites exist, and at least one states that its texts are "not in-game verified". Check tooltips in-game.
A practical first-build plan
- Choose your spec by how you want to play, using your class guide and the best class for beginners.
- Spend your first points in one tree and fill it row by row.
- Save your gold. Do not respec until you have tested a build for several levels.
- Re-check your build after each patch, because talent names and values move.
The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made and does not choose talents. It adds lore as you level.
