WoW Forever Skinning Guide: Where to Skin, Trainers, Skill Ranges and Camp Items

Skinning in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) is a primary gathering profession that strips leather and hide from beasts, and it pairs best with Leatherworking. You learn it from a trainer or a starting-zone quest, carry a Skinning Knife, and skin creatures whose level fits your skill, from Durotar and Dun Morogh up to Un'Goro Crater.

Quick answer: Learn Skinning from the starting quest or a trainer such as Thuwd in Orgrimmar or Maris Granger in Stormwind, keep a Skinning Knife in your bags, and skin as you quest. Pair it with Leatherworking. The creature's level decides the skill you need.

Skinning in WoW Forever advances from starting zones at skill 1 through the Barrens or Loch Modan, Thousand Needles or Arathi, Feralas, and Un'Goro Crater, with camp items Camp Chair, Field Guide and Trapper's Workbench at skill 20, 140 and 300.

The beasts of Azeroth are not only danger. A boar in the Barrens, a wolf in the hills, a raptor in a green jungle: each one leaves something behind for anyone patient and steady-handed enough to take it. The skinner walks the same roads as everyone else, and comes home heavier.

Where do you learn Skinning in WoW Forever?

Skinning begins where the first quests do. Warcraft Tavern says one starting-zone quest offers a choice of Mining, Herbalism or Skinning, each giving 2 skill points, and that the Skinning choice is called Pelt Collecting for Beginners. RankedBoost names two full trainers, Thuwd in Orgrimmar for the Horde and Maris Granger in Stormwind for the Alliance, but its trainer positions come from the original game and may differ in Forever.

Skinning is one of your two primary professions; see the professions guide.

What do the Skinning ranks require?

The knife is the same; the skill is not. Warcraft Tavern lists Journeyman at skill 50 and level 10, Expert at 125 and level 20, and Artisan at 200 and level 35, with a cap of 300. RankedBoost says your skill stops at 75, 150 and 225 until you train, but calls the level and gold costs unconfirmed.

Creature level sets the skill you need. Warcraft Tavern gives the example that Skinning 50 cannot skin level 60 enemies. It says Skinning mainly works on beasts and dragonkin, though some humanoids such as Worgen can be skinned too.

Where should you skin at each skill level?

Follow the ladder of zones. Warcraft Tavern and RankedBoost agree on the rough steps: starting zones first, with RankedBoost calling Durotar and Dun Morogh best; the Northern Barrens or Loch Modan around skill 50 to 125; Thousand Needles or Arathi Highlands near 150 to 205; Feralas from about 200 to 260; and Un'Goro Crater for the final stretch to 300.

Warcraft Tavern also lists Riverglades among the zones with level 30 to 40 creatures, which is new to Forever. See the Alliance leveling zones and Horde leveling zones. Warcraft Tavern's tip is to skin while questing rather than make dedicated trips.

What is new in Skinning compared with Classic?

Warcraft Tavern and RankedBoost both list five new leathers: Fel Hide, Fel Leather, Pristine Scale, Pristine Leather and Pristine Hide. RankedBoost says their drop sources are unconfirmed. Both also confirm the Keen Skinning Knife, which adds 3 Skinning, and the Enchant Gloves - Advanced Skinning formula, worth 10.

The Professions Legacy tree has Bountiful Harvest, which Blizzard says increases materials from mining, herbalism and skinning; Warcraft Tavern gives 20% to 100% more Scarce materials across five ranks. See the Legacy system guide.

What are the Skinning camp items?

Skinners at camp bring a little of the hunt with them. Method lists the Camp Chair at skill 20, the Field Guide at 140 and the Trapper's Workbench at 300, all giving bonus critical strike chance. Warcraft Tavern says the Camp Chair gives +2% critical strike, the Field Guide adds Track Beasts, and the workbench grants access to one trap.

RankedBoost reads the game files as a new Skinning sub-skill, Tanning, filed under Camping, with these three recipes. WoW Professions says the Camp Chair does not stack with Moonkin Aura. See the camping guide.

Which profession pairs with Skinning?

Leatherworking is the natural partner, per Warcraft Tavern and WoW Professions, since it consumes leather and hide. Warcraft Tavern says some Tailoring, Engineering and Blacksmithing recipes also use skinning materials. Read the Leatherworking guide. Spare leather also sells; see the Auction House guide. The free Lore Forever add-on shows zone background as you hunt.

What is not confirmed yet

  • RankedBoost says its beast levels, zones and leathers are estimates from the original game, and the files list no skinnable beasts.
  • Warcraft Tavern's trainer visit points of 75, 125 and 200 and its zone breakpoints do not match each other.
  • Warcraft Tavern says the exact traps from the Trapper's Workbench are unconfirmed.
  • Warcraft Tavern says the core mechanics "remain largely unchanged from Classic."
