WoW Forever Leatherworking Guide: Trainers, Ranks, Tanning Rack and Skinning Pairing

Leatherworking in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) is a primary crafting profession that cures hides into leather and sews leather and mail armor, and it pairs best with Skinning. You learn it from a trainer, then train Journeyman, Expert and Artisan as your skill passes 50, 125 and 200.

Quick answer: Learn Leatherworking from a capital or starting-zone trainer, take Skinning beside it, and craft light leather and cured hides first. Orcs, Trolls, Dwarves and Gnomes must travel, because Durotar and Dun Morogh have no trainer. A Tanning Rack at camp unlocks the advanced recipes.

Leatherworking in WoW Forever has four ranks, with Journeyman gated at skill 50 and level 10, Expert at skill 125 and level 20, Artisan at skill 200 and level 35, plus Camp Tent, Tanning Rack and Sewing Machine camp items at skill 20, 140 and 300.

Before there is plate, there is the hide. A tanner's yard smells of salt and woodsmoke, and the work is patient: scrape, cure, cut, stitch. Whoever wears the road home, the ranger, the rogue or the druid, wears what you make of what the wilds gave up.

Where do you learn Leatherworking in WoW Forever?

The tanner is rarely the first craftsman you meet, and sometimes you have to go looking. WoW Professions lists Apprentice trainers in the capitals, such as Kamari in Orgrimmar and Randal Worth in Stormwind.

Starting zones have a few: Shelene Rhobart near Brill and Adele Fielder in Elwynn Forest, both also named by Gfinity Esports, plus Chaw Stronghide in Mulgore and Nadyia Maneweaver in Teldrassil. WoW Professions says Durotar and Dun Morogh have none. See the Elwynn Forest guide and the Durotar guide.

What do the Leatherworking ranks require?

Each rank is a door that opens only after a visit. WoW Professions says Journeyman needs Leatherworking 50 and level 10, Expert needs 125, level 20 and 50 silver, and Artisan needs 200 and level 35. Warcraft Tavern lists the same skill and level gates for all professions.

Journeyman trainers include Karolek in Orgrimmar and Simon Tanner in Stormwind. WoW Professions names Una in Thunder Bluff for the Horde and Telonis in Darnassus for the Alliance as Expert trainers. Gfinity instead lists Una at Camp Taurajo and Sara Tanner in Lakeshire, so confirm in game. Artisan is taught by Hahrana Ironhide at Camp Mojache in Feralas for the Horde, and by Drakk Stonehand at Aerie Peak in The Hinterlands for the Alliance. WoW Professions adds that Nightscape Pants is taught only by those Artisan trainers.

How do you level Leatherworking in WoW Forever?

The early climb runs on light leather and cured hide. WoW Professions moves from Light Leather and Cured Light Hide to Embossed Leather Gloves near skill 55, then Guardian Gloves and Nightscape pieces close to 225, and warns that Forever recipes turn grey about 25 points earlier than in Classic.

WoW Professions says leather is most of the cost, and both it and Warcraft Tavern recommend Skinning. WoW Professions estimates about 415 Light Leather and 315 Thick Leather to reach skill 225, and Gfinity's totals differ, so treat both as rough. Read the Skinning guide to gather it yourself.

What are the Leatherworking camp items?

A campfire gives the tanner a roadside yard. Blizzard's deep dive recap says each profession has three camp objects, and that the Leatherworking Tanning Rack is required for more advanced recipes. Method lists the Camp Tent at skill 20, the Tanning Rack at 140 and the Sewing Machine at 300.

According to WoW Professions, the Camp Tent grants rested experience of up to 5% of a level, once an hour. The Tanning Rack Blueprint drops from Razorclaw the Butcher in Shadowfang Keep, can appear on the Auction House, and is crafted from 5 Medium Leather, 3 Fine Thread and 2 Simple Wood. WoW Professions says no Tanning Rack stands in any town, and 48 recipes need one. The Sewing Machine source is not known yet. See the camping guide.

What is new in Leatherworking compared with Classic?

RankedBoost marks Blue Suede Gloves, Supple Scorpid Bracers and Blue Suede Bracers as new to Forever, and Warcraft Tavern's pattern preview lists many new leather and mail sets. Blizzard says more than 600 new recipes arrive across professions. For gold, see the best professions guide and the gold making guide. The free Lore Forever add-on shows quest background as you hunt for hides.

What is not confirmed yet

  • WoW Professions says its route comes from the beta and stops at skill 225; the rest is untested.
  • Dragonscale, Elemental and Tribal specializations appear in WoW Professions' trainer list and RankedBoost's route notes, but how they work in Forever is unconfirmed. Gfinity's claim that they unlock at character level 400 is not used here.
  • Gfinity lists different camp object names, such as Drying Rack, which Method, WoW Professions and Warcraft Tavern do not.
  • Warcraft Tavern puts the Apprentice level at 5 for crafting professions; WoW Professions says there is no requirement.
  • The Sewing Machine Blueprint location is unknown.
