WoW Forever RP Ruleset: Naming Rules and What to Expect
The Roleplay (RP) ruleset in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) is a realmless community for players who want to stay in character, and Blizzard says it has "strict naming conventions and behavior rules" and, unlike the PvP ruleset, lets you create both Horde and Alliance characters. Blizzard lists it for the November 4, 2026 launch (October 22 and October 29 posts). Blizzard has not published a rule list, so details below are labeled by source.
Quick answer: Blizzard describes RP as strict naming conventions and behavior rules; Method says it otherwise follows Normal rules. Blizzard confirms both factions, group play only inside your ruleset, and no switching later. Roleplay-PvP is a separate ruleset. Details are as of November 2, 2026.

Key facts
- Blizzard's description: strict naming conventions and behavior rules, for players who want to immerse themselves as a character in a fantasy-based world (Blizzard, October 22)
- Factions: Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore allow both; PvP allows only one (Blizzard, October 22)
- Grouping: same ruleset and same faction only; battlegrounds may mix rulesets except Hardcore (Blizzard)
- Launch: November 4, 2026 (Blizzard, October 29)
What is the RP ruleset in WoW Forever?
Forever has no realm list. Blizzard says each ruleset works "more like a broad player ecosystem than a single traditional realm", and you choose one when you create a character. Method adds that each ruleset is one big server per region, made workable by layering (our layering guide explains it).
Blizzard's definition (October 22, repeated October 29) is the line above; it lists no rules. Warcraft Tavern's guide says roleplaying is not required, but disrupting the roleplay of others is not allowed; Method says you are expected to roleplay your character (both undated). Those readings differ, so treat the strictness as unconfirmed. See the rulesets overview.
How does RP differ from Normal and PvP?
- Normal: Blizzard says you may fight other players at your own discretion; Method says you switch PvP on with /pvp.
- PvP: you are almost always at risk of attack, and you can create characters for one faction only (Blizzard).
- RP: Method says it mainly follows Normal rules, with roleplay expected. Blizzard does not say how RP flags you for PvP.
Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across rulesets (Blizzard).
What are the naming rules for the RP ruleset?
Blizzard's September 21 article says every character has a first and a second name, the full combination is unique within the region, and names must follow the in-game code of conduct. It says a second name can signal a family, a place or a title-like identity, as with Asha Brightvale and Thalen Brightvale. You can hide it on nameplates; it still shows in chat.
The extra RP rules come from guides. Warcraft Tavern says an RP name can be flagged for non-medieval or non-fantasy names, names referencing well-known people, characters, brands, places or icons, and names of multiple words. Method says an RP name must be believable for a person in the setting, so puns allowed elsewhere are out. Method says names cannot currently be changed. See character name rules and name reservation errors.
What about Roleplay-PvP?
Blizzard's ruleset article lists Roleplay PvP with the same strict naming and behavior wording, plus the risk of attack from opposing characters. Blizzard's Aggrend wrote on October 22 that, after the team had voiced concerns on the podcast, it examined what adding the ruleset would take and decided to add it for launch on November 4; Warcraft Tavern says the concern was fragmenting the population. Tavern's guide says it combines the Roleplay and PvP rulesets. Blizzard does not say whether it has PvP's one-faction rule; its faction sentence names only Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore as allowing both. Method reports concern that RP-PvP could become PvP players' second-faction server. Our RP-PvP guide goes deeper.
How do you choose RP?
Pick RP if names and in-character talk are the point, and agree on ruleset and faction with friends first. Method says most new players should start on Normal. See best class for roleplay and which ruleset to pick.
How can the Lore Forever add-on help with roleplay?
The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made and not affiliated with Blizzard. For in-character play it gives readable story for the zone and quest you are in, with a Lore button on quests, a one-line story on NPC tooltips, and recorded narration for zones and dungeons; its quest and NPC coverage runs to level 30. Narrators are generated voices, and Forever is treated as its own continuity set 25 years after the Dark Portal. Willo is an optional companion app: sign in with a Lore Forever account, free to start with 50 answers a day. She can be wrong, so check her against Blizzard. Neither changes your ruleset.
What is not confirmed yet
- The full RP behavior rules and how Blizzard enforces them; no Blizzard list was found.
- Whether roleplay is required or only disruption is banned (Method and Tavern differ).
- Whether Roleplay-PvP has PvP's one-faction rule.
- Launch-day behavior: the beta only offered Normal and PvP (Warcraft Tavern).
