What Is the Warsong Clan? Grom Hellscream's Orcs and Warsong Gulch Explained

The Warsong clan is the orc clan of Grom Hellscream, named for its war song, whose logging in Ashenvale started a war with the night elves and whose name lives on in the Warsong Outriders, the Horde side of Warsong Gulch. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft (year 25 after the Dark Portal), Grom is long dead, but Warcraft Wiki places the Outriders' base at Mor'shan Base Camp in the northern Barrens, and kami-labs' beta data puts Captain Shatterskull there.

Quick answer: Grom led the Warsong, drank the pit lord Mannoroth's blood, and later, on Kalimdor, was sent north by Thrall to find lumber. The felling of Ashenvale's trees brought war with the night elves, and Grom died killing Mannoroth. In the original game the Warsong Outriders fight the Silverwing Sentinels for Warsong Gulch.

The Warsong clan's story, step by step — A five-step timeline of the Warsong clan: a clan named for its war song under Grom Hellscream, Grom drinks Mannoroth's blood, Thrall sends the Warsong north for Ashenvale lumber, the logging brings war with the night elves and the death of Cenarius, and Grom dies killing Mannoroth at Demon Fall Canyon. In WoW Forever, Captain Shatterskull stands at Mor'shan Base Camp and Warsong Gulch is a 10 versus 10 battleground from level 10. Sources: Warcraft Wiki, Engadget and kami-labs.

A clan named for a song leaves its mark in sound before anything else. The Warsong left theirs on the forests of Ashenvale, and then on a battleground that still carries their name.

Who are the Warsong clan?

Every clan has a way of announcing itself, and the Warsong's was written into the name. Engadget's Know Your Lore on Grom Hellscream calls Grom the clan's chief and says it took its name from the war song. Warcraft Wiki ties the name to the clan's battle cries and drum marches.

Engadget says Grom stood in the vanguard that stormed Shattrath, and that he was the first of the orcs to drink the blood of the pit lord Mannoroth, which gave him and the Horde great power. Engadget's orc-politics column adds that the drinking bound the Horde's orcs to serve Mannoroth. Engadget also says Gul'dan convinced Blackhand that Grom was too disruptive for the first wave through the Dark Portal. Warcraft Wiki says the gathered chieftains, the Warsong's among them, sat out the First and Second Wars on Draenor. For Grom's years in hiding and his part in freeing the internment camps, read Who Is Grom Hellscream?.

Why did the Warsong cut down Ashenvale?

Engadget's Know Your Lore on the Third War says Thrall sent Grom and the Warsong north to find lumber, and that their logging in Ashenvale led to war with the night elves. Warcraft Wiki says the Warsong built Splintertree Post there and clashed with the night elves and with Cenarius.

Engadget says Cenarius intervened against the orcs, and that Grom drank from a fountain corrupted with Mannoroth's blood and ordered the Warsong to do the same, after which they used its power to kill Cenarius. Warcraft Wiki says Grom drank from a pool cursed with Mannoroth's blood while the Warsong were at Splintertree Post, and became a fel orc. Engadget says Thrall and Cairne Bloodhoof fought to free Grom, with Jaina supplying a Soul Gem, and that he then sought out Mannoroth with Thrall. Warcraft Wiki says Grom and Thrall killed Mannoroth in Demon Fall Canyon, where Grom died. Read Ashenvale explained, Who Is Thrall? and the orcs of Azeroth guide.

What are the Warsong Outriders and Warsong Gulch?

The name outlived the man. Warcraft Wiki describes the Warsong Outriders as the Horde forces of the Warsong Gulch battleground, members of the Warsong clan who are trying to defend logging operations in Ashenvale against the night-elven Silverwing Sentinels. It names Gargok as their main leader, with Captain Shatterskull and Kazragore as secondary leaders.

Icy Veins says Horde players earn reputation with the Warsong Outriders and Alliance players with the Silverwing Sentinels. For queues, ranks and the other maps, read the battlegrounds guide.

Where do you meet the Warsong in WoW Forever?

kami-labs' beta data (build 1.60.1.70205, collected October 10, 2026) lists five Warsong Gulch quests: two each at levels 15 and 25, and one at level 60. It says Captain Shatterskull at Mor'shan Base Camp in The Barrens takes the Horde-side quests, which reward Warsong Outriders reputation, and that Sentinel Farsong in Ashenvale takes the Alliance's. It also says Warsong Gulch accepts players from level 10 to 60.

Our Ashenvale guide places Splintertree Post as the Horde's main base in the forest. For the Horde route there, read the Barrens guide and the Horde leveling zones guide. The free Lore Forever add-on shows readable background as you stand in each place, and the optional Willo voice companion lets you ask about the people you meet. Both are fan-made.

Grom's son Garrosh belongs to later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever, and this article leaves him there.

What is not confirmed yet

Warcraft Tavern's orc overview for Forever does not mention the Warsong, Grom or the lumber operations. No source I opened lists Forever-specific Warsong dialogue.
The battleground's details here come from kami-labs' beta data and Icy Veins, and may change at launch. Icy Veins gives no level requirement.
Warcraft Wiki's Warsong Outriders page says the group was formerly led by Grom Hellscream but lists Garrosh Hellscream as a former leader in its infobox, and does not reconcile the two.
