The Lich King Explained: Ner'zhul, Arthas and WoW Forever

The Lich King is the ruler of the undead Scourge: the orc shaman Ner'zhul, torn apart and bound into the ice of the Frozen Throne in Northrend by the demon Kil'jaeden, who later merged with the human prince Arthas Menethil. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), launched on November 4, 2026 and set in the first year of WoW, he is a distant master: Blizzard says Forever begins before later journeys to places like Northrend.

Quick answer: Kil'jaeden made the Lich King to weaken Azeroth for the Burning Legion. He used Kel'Thuzad and the plague, then Arthas, and by Forever's time the two minds are one, in Northrend. His servants hold ground in Forever.

The Lich King in order: Ner'zhul bound in ice, Kel'Thuzad and the plague, Arthas takes Frostmourne, the merger, year 25, and his servants in WoW Forever.
The Lich King from Ner'zhul to the merged ruler, per Warcraft Wiki, Wowpedia and Blizzard, reviewed November 5, 2026.

A cold voice has spoken across Azeroth for years, and few who hear it know whose it is.

Key facts

  • Origin: the orc shaman Ner'zhul, encased in ice by Kil'jaeden (Warcraft Wiki; Blizzard French news)
  • Year 25: he gave commands to Kel'Thuzad, then lay dormant for years (Warcraft Wiki, Wowpedia)
  • Forever scope: early Year 1 of WoW, before journeys to Northrend (Blizzard)

Who is the Lich King in Warcraft lore?

Warcraft Wiki says Kil'jaeden created the Lich King from the spirit of the orc shaman Ner'zhul. When Ner'zhul tried to flee Draenor, the demon tore his body apart and sealed his spirit in diamond-hard ice from the Twisting Nether. Blizzard's French news site confirms the outline: the roi-liche, also known as Ner'zhul, was created by Kil'jaeden and imprisoned in what became the Frozen Throne. French players know the title as Roi-liche. For the shaman he once was, see shamanism and the Earthen Ring.

How did the Lich King destroy Lordaeron?

Warcraft Wiki says Kel'Thuzad and his Cult of the Damned released the plague, and Blizzard's French page agrees Kel'Thuzad led the Cult. Prince Arthas took up Frostmourne and became the Lich King's champion. See the Scourge and the plague, Kel'Thuzad and Arthas.

What is the Lich King doing in WoW Forever's time?

Warcraft Wiki says Illidan's spell worsened a crack in the Frozen Throne so that the Lich King's power seeped out, and that Arthas then returned to Northrend and merged with Ner'zhul; Wowpedia covers the same events. Both say that after the merger he ordered the lich Amnennar the Coldbringer to stay on Kalimdor and expand the Scourge's influence, gave commands to Kel'Thuzad in Year 25, and sat dormant for several years while his servants built Icecrown Citadel.

Blizzard places Forever in the early Year 1 of WoW, and the Lore Forever FAQ dates it to 25 years after the Dark Portal opened. I found no Blizzard page confirming the wiki's order of events.

Where do players meet the Lich King's reach in Forever?

Players meet his servants instead: Amnennar the Coldbringer is the last boss of Razorfen Downs, per Warcraft Tavern; see our Razorfen Downs guide, and the Western Plaguelands guide covers the plague country.

On Northrend, Icy Veins reports that Holly Longdale said at PAX Australia that nothing is off the table but she expects the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor to keep evolving. That is an interview remark, not a roadmap.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Whether the Lich King becomes a Forever story figure; no source I opened says so.
  • The exact year of the merger; our Forever timeline notes that guides disagree.
  • Wrath of the Lich King events, such as Arthas's death, are later in the timeline and outside WoW Forever.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?

The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made, not affiliated with Blizzard, and has no internet access. Its library has a Lich King page, narrated by generated voices, and its lore leaves out later expansions, per its FAQ. Willo is a separate companion app with a Windows 10 or 11 download and an Apple Silicon Mac download (macOS 12 or later); the Lore Forever FAQ calls her a companion app for Windows and Mac. She is free to start with 50 answers a day, you can ask her out loud who the Lich King is, and she can be wrong and is not official.
