Ironforge Explained: Dwarven Capital, Districts, Trainers and the Deeprun Tram

Ironforge is the dwarven capital of the Alliance, a city carved into a mountain in northern Dun Morogh, where King Magni Bronzebeard rules in the original game. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), Warcraft Tavern says Ironforge also has a Dwarf Shaman option, the Deeprun Tram to Stormwind and the Hall of Thanes dungeon.

Quick answer: Ironforge's districts include the Commons, the Great Forge, the Mystic Ward, the Military Ward, the Forlorn Cavern and Tinker Town. Mage, paladin and priest trainers are in the Mystic Ward, hunter and warrior trainers in the Military Ward, and rogue, shaman and warlock trainers in the Forlorn Cavern. Warcraft Tavern lists no druid trainers there.

Ironforge at a glance
Six Ironforge districts are shown: the Commons has the Auction House and bank; the Great Forge is the molten heart of the city, and the Hall of Thanes, levels 13 to 18, is entered from King Magni's throne room; the Mystic Ward has mage, paladin and priest trainers; the Military Ward has hunter and warrior trainers; the Forlorn Cavern has rogue, shaman and warlock trainers; Tinker Town has the Deeprun Tram to Stormwind.

Warcraft Wiki places the Great Forge in the molten heart of the city. Dwarves and gnomes share its halls, and both the Deeprun Tram and the road through Dun Morogh lead here.

Key facts

  • Role: Dwarven capital and an Alliance capital (Warcraft Tavern).
  • Location: Carved into a mountain in northern Dun Morogh (Warcraft Wiki, Wikipedia 2006 snapshot).
  • Ruler in the original game: King Magni Bronzebeard (Wikipedia 2006 snapshot, Warcraft Tavern); Warcraft Wiki's current page lists a later council.

  • Dungeon: Hall of Thanes, levels 13 to 18 (Warcraft Tavern).

Who rules Ironforge and who lives there?

The mountain has held more than one people. A 2006 Wikipedia snapshot says King Magni Bronzebeard leads the dwarves, and Warcraft Tavern names him as one of the city's two Alliance leaders; both Warcraft Wiki and the snapshot say Ironforge held through the Second War, the snapshot adding that the Horde never breached it. Warcraft Wiki's current page lists a later council in its infobox. After Gnomeregan fell, the gnomes took refuge here: Warcraft Wiki says Gelbin Mekkatorque led the survivors to the city, where Magni gave them shelter and they built Tinker Town, and the snapshot says they converted part of the city into Tinker Town. Read the Muradin and Magni Bronzebeard story, the dwarves of Ironforge guide and Gnomeregan explained.

What are the districts of Ironforge?

Warcraft Wiki and the snapshot name the same districts (the snapshot also lists the Hall of Explorers), and Warcraft Tavern says the circular layout has corridors cutting through the middle.

  • The Commons: Warcraft Wiki puts the Auction House on the outer edge and the bank across from it on the inner edge.
  • The Great Forge: Warcraft Wiki calls it the molten heart of the city and places a throne room there. Warcraft Tavern says the Hall of Thanes is entered from King Magni's throne room.
  • The Mystic Ward: Warcraft Wiki and Wowpedia put the Hall of Mysteries, with mage, paladin and priest trainers, here.
  • The Military Ward: Warcraft Wiki puts the Hall of Arms, with hunter and warrior trainers, here.
  • Tinker Town: Warcraft Wiki and the snapshot place the Deeprun Tram entrance here.

Where are the class trainers in Ironforge?

Warcraft Tavern's class trainer guide matches the wikis and adds the rest. Hunter and warrior trainers, with the hunter pet trainer, are in the Hall of Arms. Mage trainers, with the mage portal trainer, paladin trainers and priest trainers are in the Mystic Ward. Rogue, shaman and warlock trainers, with the warlock demon trainer, are in the Forlorn Cavern. The shaman trainer listed is Eldrun Stormbreaker. Warcraft Tavern's dwarf guide calls shaman a new class for dwarves and says dwarves are the only Alliance race for it. No druid trainers are listed. See the Shaman guide and the class quests guide.

What is the Hall of Thanes?

The Hall of Thanes is the dungeon beneath the city, listed by Warcraft Tavern at levels 13 to 18 and described as an Alliance dungeon entered from King Magni's throne room. Warcraft Tavern marks it New in its dungeon list, while Warcraft Wiki lists the Hall of Thanes as a subzone of Old Ironforge and ties Old Ironforge to the Shattering in 28 ADP, so the two sources do not line up. See the Hall of Thanes guide and the Dun Morogh guide for the road in, and the Loch Modan guide for the road out. The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable background as you stand in each place, and the optional Willo Windows companion answers lore questions by voice.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Hall of Explorers: A 2006 Wikipedia snapshot names it as a district and Warcraft Wiki describes its library and museum, but no source I opened says what it holds in Forever.
  • Flight master location: Warcraft Tavern says Ironforge has a flight master but gives no spot, and Warcraft Wiki's page puts the gryphon master at the inner eastern edge of the Great Forge.
  • Other Forever changes: No source I opened lists any beyond the new shaman trainer.
  • Beta data: The beta had a level 30 cap, and details may change.
