WoW Forever Shaman Beginner Guide: Totems, Specs and Leveling
The Shaman is a totem-using hybrid that can cast, melee or heal, and Dwarf Shamans are new in Forever. Your four totem schools unlock through class quests from level 4 to level 30, and Warcraft Tavern's beta guide calls Enhancement the preferred open-world leveling spec. Mana is the main thing to manage.
Quick answer: Level as Enhancement for open-world questing, or Restoration if you mostly run dungeons. Unlock Earth (level 4), Fire (10), Water (20) and Air (30) totems through class quests, use Flame Shock plus your main attack, and learn Ghost Wolf for fast travel.

Who can be a Shaman
Shamans are available to Dwarf, Orc, Tauren, Troll and Skyborne characters. Dwarf Shaman and Skyborne Shaman are new. The Dwarf is the Alliance's only Shaman option. See the race and class guide.
Warcraft Tavern, a community guide, picks Orc as the top Horde choice for Blood Fury, Savage and Hardiness. It calls Troll's Berserking strong for any Shaman, and suggests Skyborne for Elemental and Restoration. Those are opinions, not Blizzard statements.
The three specializations
- Elemental: a ranged caster using Nature and Fire spells with big critical hits. In Forever, Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning are multicast, and Lightning Overload and Lava Burst are new talents.
- Enhancement: a melee "spellblade" using melee attacks, instant-cast Shocks and occasional Lightning Bolts. It can use two-handers without talents. Stormstrike has an 8-second cooldown, and the capstone Rage of the Farseer is a personal Bloodlust-like buff with a 3-minute cooldown, since Shamans do not get Bloodlust.
- Restoration: a healer with strong group healing. Riptide is the capstone, adding an instant heal over time and boosting Chain Heal by 25%.
Warcraft Tavern sees some potential for Enhancement tanking but doubts the survivability talents are enough for end game.
Totems and the new Call spells
Totems unlock through class quests: Earth at level 4, Fire at 10, Water at 20 and Air at 30. Only one totem per element can be active.
Forever adds three Call spells that summon up to four totems, one per element, for their combined mana cost with a 3-second cast: Call of the Elements (level 20), Call of the Ancestors (30) and Call of the Spirits (40). Totemic Projection moves your totems, and Totemic Recall dismisses them and returns some mana. Grace of Air Totem can now combine with Windfury Totem or Flametongue Totem without Totem Twisting. Tranquil Air Totem was removed.
Enable the Totem Bar in Edit Mode under Advanced Options. Engineers can now craft totems.
Ghost Wolf and mobility
Ghost Wolf gives 40% movement speed, compared with 30% for Aspect of the Cheetah. Improved Ghost Wolf makes it instant and usable indoors, and it is the only realistic talent at level 20. Shamans have no hard crowd control, meaning no stuns, Hex or fear.
A simple leveling routine
- Enhancement (level 30): the preferred open-world build per Warcraft Tavern, taking Mental Dexterity, Elemental Weapons, Flurry, Shamanistic Focus, Stormstrike and Improved Ghost Wolf.
- Elemental (level 30): Queue Flame Shock as Lightning Bolt finishes. With Lava Burst, queue Flame Shock during the cast.
- Restoration (level 30): the guide calls it a strong dungeon healer, with Ancestral Healing, Nature's Swiftness, Mindfulness, Water Shield and Mana Tide Totem.
Downrank Shocks for utility, and use Earth Shock as a soft taunt. Drop Tremor Totem before enemies use Sleep, Fear or Charm.
What is different in Forever
- Multicast lightning spells and a new Fire Nova that explodes around your active Fire Totem.
- Earthbound turns Earthbind Totem into an on-demand root.
- Maelstrom Weapon only procs Lightning Bolt in Forever's version.
- Mana tools: Mindfulness, Water Shield, and Mana Tide Totem moved to the middle of the Restoration tree, though the guide doubts they fully solve Shaman mana.
- Professions: Leatherworking, Alchemy and Engineering are recommended. See professions.
What is still uncertain
The beta starts at level 20 and later rises to 30, so talent depth is limited. Warcraft Tavern's stat priorities are provisional and will be reevaluated at level 60. Its comments note that one Skysight interaction may be a bug. The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made and does not change class play.
