The Dwarves of Ironforge: Bronzebeard, Wildhammer and Dark Iron Clans Explained

The dwarves of Ironforge are the Bronzebeard clan, the winners of the War of the Three Hammers, who rule Ironforge and Dun Morogh under King Magni Bronzebeard; the other two hammers, the Wildhammer and Dark Iron clans, went their own ways. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), set in the first year of World of Warcraft (year 25 after the Dark Portal), Warcraft Tavern says dwarves begin in Coldridge Valley and that King Magni and High Tinker Mekkatorque hold court in Ironforge.

Quick answer: After High King Modimus Anvilmar died, the Bronzebeard, Wildhammer and Dark Iron clans fought for Ironforge. The Bronzebeards kept the city, the Wildhammers settled the Hinterlands and bonded with gryphons, and the Dark Irons fell to the Firelord Ragnaros. The Bronzebeards later led Ironforge into the Alliance in the Second War.

The three dwarf clans of Ironforge
Three columns for the dwarf clans: the Bronzebeards won the War of the Three Hammers and rule Ironforge and Dun Morogh under King Magni, the Wildhammers settled Aerie Peak in the Hinterlands and bonded with gryphons, and the Dark Irons under Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan summoned Ragnaros and were enslaved by him. In WoW Forever, dwarves start in Coldridge Valley and the Hall of Thanes lies beneath Ironforge. Sources: Warcraft Wiki, Engadget, Blizzard Watch and Warcraft Tavern.

Dwarves carry their history in stone. Ironforge stands in the mountains of Dun Morogh, and its past is a quarrel between three clans and a war that ended in fire.

Who are the dwarves of Ironforge?

Dwarves are an old people with a stranger origin than their beards suggest. Warcraft Wiki says they descend from the earthen, titan-made creatures created from the Forge of Wills, and that the Curse of Flesh turned the earthen to flesh. The in-game description Warcraft Tavern quotes says dwarves once cared only for buried riches until records of a god-like race that gave them life drew them toward lost artifacts.

For the two kings the guides most often ask about, read Muradin and Magni Bronzebeard.

What was the War of the Three Hammers?

When a king dies without settling who rules, the hammers come out. Engadget's Know Your Lore on the dwarves says High King Anvilmar's death set the Bronzebeard, Wildhammer and Dark Iron clans against each other, and that the Bronzebeards won. Blizzard Watch's Know Your Lore on the Dark Iron dwarves says the Bronzebeards drove the other two clans out. Warcraft Wiki says the Bronzebeards kept Ironforge and Dun Morogh.

Engadget says Thaurissan, the Dark Irons' Sorcerer-Thane, summoned Ragnaros, whose eruption destroyed the Dark Iron city and ended the war, leaving the surviving Dark Irons to serve the Firelord. Blizzard Watch says Thaurissan lost control of a ritual that summoned Ragnaros and destroyed his city, and that the Dark Irons entered a two-century period of enslavement. Sources word the city's location differently: Warcraft Wiki and Engadget say it stood in the Redridge Mountains, while Blizzard Watch says Thaurissan built it in the Searing Gorge and Burning Steppes in the Redridge Mountains.

Who are the Wildhammer and the Dark Iron?

The Wildhammers took to the sky and the Dark Irons went under the earth. Engadget says the Wildhammers settled Aerie Peak in the Hinterlands, where they bonded with gryphons, and that Chief Thane Kurdran led them into the Alliance after an orc assault on Aerie Peak.

Blizzard Watch calls the Dark Irons Ironforge's former spymasters and arcanists. Engadget's 2010 orc-politics column says the Dark Iron dwarves were pushed down into Blackrock Depths, and Warcraft Wiki's Blackrock Spire page says the fortress was held by the Dark Iron dwarves for centuries. Read The Blackrock clan explained for the orcs who took the Spire from them.

How did Ironforge become allies with the gnomes and the Alliance?

Friendship between peoples starts with curiosity. Engadget says a dwarven explorer found the gnomes about 200 years after the dwarves first met humans, and the two peoples became allies. Warcraft Wiki says dwarves taught the gnomes stoneworking and the gnomes taught the dwarves engineering. When Gnomeregan fell to a trogg attack, Warcraft Wiki says Magni gave the gnome refugees asylum, and Warcraft Tavern says gnomes moved to Ironforge afterward.

In the Second War, Engadget says the orcs conquered Khaz Modan and besieged Ironforge but could not break its defenses, and that Magni then led Ironforge into the Alliance of Lordaeron. Warcraft Wiki agrees that the siege of Ironforge failed. See also Gelbin Mekkatorque and Gnomeregan.

Where do you meet the dwarves in WoW Forever?

You begin among them. Warcraft Tavern says dwarves and gnomes start in the Coldridge Valley part of Dun Morogh. It says Ironforge has the bank, Auction House, trainers and a Flight Master within easy reach, and the Deeprun Tram runs to Stormwind. The Hall of Thanes, a new early dungeon, is entered from King Magni's throne room, and Warcraft Tavern's dungeon list gives it levels 13 to 18.

Dwarves can also play Shaman for the first time, per Warcraft Tavern. For the zone, read the Dun Morogh guide, the Hall of Thanes guide and the Ironforge guide. The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable background in each place, and the optional Willo voice companion answers lore questions. Both are fan-made.

Later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever, Warcraft Wiki says Magni is turned to diamond during the Cataclysm. This article leaves that there.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Blizzard has not published Forever-specific dwarf lore changes. Warcraft Wiki's dwarf page mixes events from several eras.
