WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Guide: Entrance, Bosses and Lore

Hall of Thanes is a level 13 to 18 dungeon beneath Ironforge, built around an ancient dwarven burial site that Dark Iron dwarves have broken into. Four bosses stand between you and the final chamber, and five quests send you in. It is the earliest of the nine new WoW Forever dungeons, and Warcraft Tavern calls it the Alliance counterpart to the Horde's Ragefire Chasm.

Quick answer: Stand at Ironforge's Great Forge, face the High Seat, walk into King Magni Bronzebeard's hall and turn left to a spiderweb-covered passage (about 43.5, 52.0). The dungeon has four bosses: Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus, Plunder and Durgen Dirgehammer.

At a glance

  • Level range: 13 to 18 (Blizzard confirmed this range for the beta)
  • Location: deep beneath Ironforge, in Dun Morogh
  • Bosses: four
  • Quests: five
  • Faction: built as Alliance content. Warcraft Tavern says Horde players can enter but there are no Horde quests inside, and the level range makes it hard for them.

Hall of Thanes is part of Blizzard's set of nine new dungeons. See the new dungeons overview for the full list. Blizzard has not said which dungeons are open on launch day.

How to find the entrance

  1. Stand at the central Great Forge in Ironforge.
  2. Face the High Seat, where King Magni Bronzebeard sits.
  3. Walk into the king's hall and turn left. You will see a spiderweb-covered passage at roughly 43.5, 52.0.
  4. Follow the passage down to the entrance.

Be careful on the way: Ironforge is built over lava, and a fall is deadly.

The route inside

Warcraft Tavern's guide lays the dungeon out in this order:

  1. Clear the Tormented Souls and Enraged Apparitions at the start.
  2. Go west and speak to the Ghostly Attendant, who gives the quest An Ancient Grudge.
  3. Enter Anvilmar's Rest, the chamber with the large central tomb, and fight Faldrim Anvilmar.
  4. Leave through the south-eastern corridor, where Dark Iron Looters, Bloodhound Runts, Engineers and Summoners wait. Kegs of Seaforium Blasting Powder are scattered along the way.
  5. Pass through a natural cavern to Magmatus.
  6. Return to the tomb halls. A pack of four Dark Iron dwarves guards two kegs.
  7. Fight Plunder in the hallway.
  8. Cross the bridge past the Lesser Stone Golems to the Reliquary of Kings and Durgen Dirgehammer.

The four bosses

  • Faldrim Anvilmar: casts Mind Blast, which you can interrupt but do not have to. His Anvilmar's Curse lasts 10 minutes, slows attack and casting speed by 20% and makes the target immune to Poisons and Bleeds. Dispel it if you can.
  • Magmatus: a fire elemental that arrives with a Dark Iron Summoner. Kill the Summoner first. Magmatus pulses fire damage around himself, so ranged players should keep their distance and healers should watch the melee group.
  • Plunder: a stone golem whose only real threat is Knockback. Tank him with your back to a wall.
  • Durgen Dirgehammer: the final boss. He casts an area fear, so clear the room first and kill the two Lesser Stone Golems early. A Shaman's Tremor Totem helps.

Trash and tips

  • Shoot the Seaforium kegs from range, especially the two near the Dark Iron pack.
  • Interrupt Dark Iron Summoners to stop fire elementals from appearing.
  • Bloodhound Runts apply Infected Wounds, which raises the physical damage you take. A dispel, a Simple Poultice (First Aid) or the dwarf racial Stoneform removes it.
  • Clear the trash before pulling Magmatus and Durgen.

The five quests

  • Important Heirlooms: from Thom Filch, just outside the dungeon.
  • The Restless Dead: from Afadra Dunwall, up the stairs from the entrance.
  • Old Ironforge Incursion: starts from a Dark Iron Map looted from a Dark Iron Spy in Dun Morogh.
  • An Ancient Grudge: from the Ghostly Attendant inside. Turn it in as you leave.
  • The Treaty of Understanding: from a tablet in a vault in the final boss room. Turn it in with King Magni outside.

The story, without spoilers

The Hall of Thanes is described as an ancient dwarven burial site under the capital. Dark Iron dwarves have slipped in to plunder its riches, and a party of adventurers has to stop them. Durgen Dirgehammer leads the raid, and he is after something in the deep that Warcraft Tavern does not fully explain.

That setup fits the city above. Ironforge is the seat of King Magni Bronzebeard, and the dwarves have always guarded their past carefully. If you want the wider picture, read the lore primer. The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable background about Ironforge and its halls while you play. It is fan-made and does not play the encounters for you.

Rewards and preparation

Warcraft Tavern says the dungeon has "powerful early-game rewards" but does not list specific items. Blizzard has said new dungeon items follow a new itemization rule with unique stats, and that every dropped item unlocks its transmog appearance for each eligible looter. Most dungeon XP now sits in dungeon-tied questlines, so repeat runs after the questline give much less XP than open-world questing.

Before you enter, bring a tank, a healer, a dispel for Anvilmar's Curse and a way to interrupt. See the beginner's guide if you are new to group play.
