The Hinterlands

The Hinterlands are a rugged, densely forested wilderness in eastern Lordaeron, tucked between the Plaguelands and the sea. The region is defined by ancient Amani troll temple ruins, the towering aeries of the Wildhammer clan at Aerie Peak, and a colossal Great Tree anchoring a mysterious rift to the Emerald Dream.

Long before humans or dwarves walked northern Lordaeron, the forest trolls of the Amani Empire held dominion over the Hinterlands. Following their defeat in the ancient Troll Wars, their empire shattered into disparate tribes. Centuries later, after the tragic War of the Three Hammers drove the Wildhammer dwarves from Grim Batol, the dwarves migrated north and made their home on the surface at Aerie Peak. Taming the native gryphons and embracing shamanic traditions, the Wildhammer constructed a massive skybound stronghold. The trolls viewed these surface-dwelling dwarves as unwelcome squatters upon ancestral lands, sparking a ceaseless feud of skirmishes and raids.
