Mage
Mages are scholarly spellcasters who bend the fabric of reality through arcane study, hurling destructive fire, controlling frost, and raw arcane energy. While physically fragile and cloaked only in cloth, their mastery over teleportation, conjuration, and battlefield crowd control makes them formidable allies and terrifying foes. Their discipline requires immense mental dedication, balancing immense destructive potential against the perilous history of arcane misuse.
Scholars of the Arcane
The path of the mage demands intellect, focus, and years of rigorous study. Rather than communing with spirits or relying on divine faith, magi treat magic as a precise cosmic science. By drawing upon arcane energies, a practitioner can weave raw destructive power, summon searing bursts of flame, or chill the surrounding air into solid ice and howling blizzards. Because heavy armor disrupts the delicate somatic gestures and mental focus required for incantations, mages wear light cloth, relying instead on wards, mana barriers, and evasive spells to protect themselves.
The Legacy of Dalaran and Arathor
Human magical heritage began nearly three millennia ago during the Troll Wars, when high elven sorcerers instructed one hundred humans of the Empire of Arathor to turn the tide against the Amani. As the number of human practitioners multiplied, fearful mundane citizens drove many magi to establish the magocracy of Dalaran. Under the governance of the Kirin Tor, Dalaran became the central archive of magical study for the northern kingdoms, formalizing the traditions of combat magic that later supported the Alliance of Lordaeron through the First and Second Wars.
Suspicion and Necessity
Arcane practitioners have never enjoyed uncomplicated trust. From the ancient cataclysm wrought by the Highborne to the catastrophic fall of Dalaran during the Third War, magic's volatile nature evokes widespread wariness. The Church of the Holy Light has historically treated wizardry with skepticism, and conservative knights have often viewed arcane spellcrafters as damned souls or a necessary evil on the battlefield. Despite this suspicion, civil and military leaders recognize that a capable magus offers invaluable battlefield supremacy, swift mass transportation, and essential countermeasures against supernatural threats.
Mages of the Horde and the High Order
The arcane is not the Alliance's alone. Troll and Forsaken mages serve the Horde, and orcs who take up the art begin under the Darkspear mage Mai'ah in the Valley of Trials, who teaches that patience and careful judgment matter more than raw power. Among the Skyborne, the High Order descends from the Highborne of Eldre'Thalas. Their ages in Skywall cost them much of their ancestors' arcane knowledge, and with the wind spirits gone from Zephras Isle they seek to recover it. Skyborne mages fight for the Alliance.
