Church of the Holy Light

The Church's origins reach back over a millennium to the faith in the Holy Light that took root among the humans of Arathor, teaching them to channel sacred power to cure injuries and purge affliction. Driven by tenets of charity, righteousness, and the fundamental belief that the Light resides within all thinking beings, these teachings eventually coalesced into an organized faith. The kingdom of Lordaeron became the religious heartland of this doctrine, establishing revered sanctuaries throughout the north, including Stratholme, Andorhal, Tyr's Hand, and Light's Hope Chapel.

In the First War, the Brotherhood of Northshire answered the call to battle, healing fallen defenders against the invading Orcish Horde. Because they lacked weapons or heavy armor, these frontline clerics suffered appalling casualties at the hands of the orcs. Recognizing the need for holy warriors who could both channel holy wrath and survive physical combat, Archbishop Alonsus Faol convened with Supreme Commander Anduin Lothar during the Second War to establish the Knights of the Silver Hand. Paladins and priests alike became the moral and martial bulwark of the Alliance of Lordaeron, preserving humanity from total annihilation.

The Third War brought immense sorrow upon the faithful. When the Plague of Undeath crept across Lordaeron, the Church worked tirelessly to alleviate the sick and stem the contamination, only to be overwhelmed when the kingdom collapsed from within. With Lordaeron transformed into a Scourge-haunted wilderness, the seat of the Church transferred southward. Under the stewardship of Archbishop Benedictus, the clergy reconstituted its hierarchy within the newly constructed Cathedral of Light in Stormwind, offering solace, spiritual guidance, and military purpose to the battered survivors of the Alliance.
