Prot Warrior Tanking in WoW Forever: Basics and Threat

A Protection Warrior in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) tanks with a one-handed weapon and a shield, using Shield Slam and Revenge to build threat while keeping enemies off the group, according to Icy Veins' guide updated on November 4, 2026. Blocks, dodges and parries give you Rage, so it works best when enemies hit you. Levels 31 to 60 are still being tested.

Quick answer: Wear a shield, stay in Defensive Stance, keep Sunder Armor stacked, use Revenge and Shield Slam, and spend spare Rage on Heroic Strike or Cleave (Warcraft Tavern's priority list). Blizzard's November 2 notes raised Defensive Stance's threat bonus from 30% to 80%.

Prot Warrior threat priority from Warcraft Tavern's beta guide: spend extra Rage on Heroic Strike or Cleave, keep Battle Shout up, keep Thunder Clap and Demoralizing Shout up, stack Sunder Armor, use Revenge, keep Rend on, use Shield Slam. Rage comes from blocks, dodges and parries per Icy Veins.
Protection Warrior threat priority as Warcraft Tavern lists it, with Icy Veins on Rage, as of November 6, 2026.

Key facts

  • Rage: blocks, dodges and parries generate extra Rage (Icy Veins); misses generate none (Warcraft Tavern)
  • Defensive Stance threat bonus: 80%, up from 30% (Blizzard development notes, November 2)
  • Armor: Mail before level 40, Plate after (Warcraft Tavern)
  • RankedBoost: Protection Warrior A overall as a tank, S for threat (grades October 3)

How does a Protection Warrior tank in WoW Forever?

Icy Veins says you switch between targets on a dungeon pull to keep threat on the pack, using Shield Slam and Revenge when available and saving enough Rage for Shield Block or an interrupt. Shield Wall and Last Stand cover dangerous moments. Blizzard's Priest and Warrior deep dive says Thunder Clap can now be used in Defensive Stance, with Vanguard letting you Charge from it and Defiance now requiring a shield to add threat.

What should I press for threat?

Warcraft Tavern's Protection guide (written for the level 30 beta, undated) lists a priority: spend excess Rage on Heroic Strike or Cleave, keep Battle Shout up, keep Thunder Clap and Demoralizing Shout up, stack Sunder Armor, use Revenge, keep Rend on, then Shield Slam. For how threat works generally, see threat and aggro explained.

How do I get enough Rage?

Icy Veins credits the talents Shield Specialization and Master of Defense with extra Rage from blocks, dodges and parries, and Focused Rage with cheaper offensive abilities. Blizzard's Priest and Warrior deep dive says Shield Specialization now has a chance on blocks to generate 5 Rage (was 1), and that critical strikes give 75% more Rage than non-critical strikes.

What changed just before launch?

Blizzard's November 2 development notes raised the Defensive Stance threat bonus from 30% to 80%, raised Defiance to 7, 13 and 20% (from 5, 10 and 15%), and cut Slam's cooldown to 15 seconds. MeinMMO (October 19) said Protection's talent tree was significantly strengthened and calls it a solid choice for leveling and solo play.

What are the known weak spots?

Icy Veins says off-tanking leaves you with fewer chances to earn Rage and use Revenge, so building threat before you take over can be hard. It adds that some elemental attacks cannot be blocked, and that both cases need testing at level 60. For group rules, see how to tank your first dungeon and dungeon groups. A Blizzard forum thread started November 6, "Tanks .. please stop pulling every mob", is player opinion on pull size, not Blizzard advice.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Level 60 performance: Icy Veins and Warcraft Tavern both say numbers are provisional
  • Current rotation order: Warcraft Tavern's list predates the November 2 notes
  • Racial picks: Icy Veins names Undead for Horde and Night Elf for Alliance; other outlets may differ

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?

Ask Willo out loud while you play, for example "what is Sunder Armor for". She can be wrong and is not official, so verify against your spellbook and tooltips. Willo is free to start with 50 answers a day and is a separate companion app for Windows 10 or 11 and Apple Silicon Macs (macOS 12 or later), per her page; her FAQ and the Lore Forever FAQ say Windows and Mac, though CurseForge still calls her a Windows app. The free Lore Forever add-on adds dungeon primers and quest stories. It has no internet access and narration uses generated voices. Both are fan-made and not affiliated with Blizzard. See also the warrior guide.
