WoW Forever Mega-Realms Explained: No Realms, Rulesets, Layers and Regions
World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) has no realm list: you play in one region, choose a ruleset, and share a single large world with everyone in that region who chose the same ruleset. Blizzard calls each ruleset a broad player ecosystem rather than a single traditional realm, and Warcraft Wiki calls the result one mega-realm per ruleset per region, while Method describes region-based megaservers, one per ruleset.
Quick answer: Pick a ruleset instead of a realm. Groups, dungeons and raids stay inside one ruleset and one faction, battlegrounds may mix rulesets (not Hardcore), and layers keep zones from overcrowding. Blizzard has published no queue or capacity numbers. Details are as of October 24, 2026.

The old way was to choose a realm and live with its crowd. Forever asks a different question first, which is how you want to play, and arranges the rest of the world around the answer. There is one road, and the people on it chose the same road.
Key facts
- No realms: you choose a ruleset, each a broad player ecosystem (Blizzard)
- Mega-realm: one per ruleset per region (Warcraft Wiki); Method calls them megaservers
- Rulesets: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and, added October 22, Roleplay-PvP at launch; Hardcore comes later (Blizzard)
- Grouping: same ruleset and same faction; Horde and Alliance never group (Blizzard)
- Names: a first and a last name, unique across the whole region (Warcraft Tavern; Method)
- Regions: each region needs its own WoW account and subscription; progress is not shared (Method)
- Language: a preferred online language setting is account-wide with a 24-hour cooldown (Blizzard)
What is a mega-realm in WoW Forever?
Blizzard's rulesets post says players choose a ruleset instead of a realm, and that each ruleset is a broad player ecosystem rather than a single traditional realm. It does not use the term "mega-realm." Warcraft Wiki says players are split by ruleset onto one mega-realm per ruleset per region, and Method, in a guide dated October 24, describes region-based megaservers organized by ruleset, with "Normal-EU" as its example of one large server. You share that server with everyone in your region who picked the same ruleset.
How many rulesets and regions are there?
At launch there are four rulesets: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Roleplay-PvP, which Blizzard added in an October 22 update. Hardcore arrives after launch. Read the rulesets guide, the RP-PvP guide and the Hardcore guide.
Regions work as in other versions of WoW, according to Method: each needs a separate WoW account and subscription, and characters, names and progress do not cross regions. Warcraft Tavern's account of the September 17 developer Q&A says Oceanic players will mostly play on Australian servers and may occasionally be grouped with players farther away, which can raise ping.
How does layering work in a shared world?
Method says layers are added and removed dynamically based on player counts, so you do not see every player in the world, and that your language setting, your guild and players you have grouped with also shape who you see. A fan guide that recaps Blizzard's podcast and forum posts says each zone has a player maximum, set per zone, and that Blizzard has not published the numbers. I could not check those originals. The same guide says the world can refresh when an area has too many or too few players.
Who can you group with?
Blizzard says you can group, run dungeons and raid only with players in the same ruleset, and that Horde and Alliance cannot group. On the PvP ruleset an account can create characters for only one faction; Method says this applies per region. Battlegrounds may include other rulesets except Hardcore. See the battlegrounds guide, the dungeon groups guide and Alliance versus Horde.
What about names, transfers and collections?
Warcraft Tavern says developers confirmed every character takes a first and a last name, unique as a pair across the whole region and all rulesets. Method lists the rules: two to twelve characters per name, no apostrophes, hyphens or numerals, and early reservation from October 27; read the Early Name Reservation guide.
Blizzard says players cannot freely switch rulesets and must make a new character to play in another, though a dead Hardcore character can transfer. Collections and Legacy Points are shared across rulesets, with Hardcore handled differently; see the Legacy system guide. The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable zone and quest background.
Will there be queues at launch?
Blizzard has not published capacity numbers, and no source I opened promises a queue-free launch. In the beta, players started a forum thread titled "Realm is full" on September 26 and guessed at login rate limiting. On September 27 a reply in the thread, apparently from Blizzard staff, said the team had found and fixed an issue that was filling the queue. Check the launch time guide and plan around the first evening.
What is not confirmed yet
- Terminology: Blizzard's own page says "ecosystem," not "mega-realm."
- Layer limits: no published player caps, and no source says whether guildmates always share a layer.
- Cross-region play: no source I opened confirms plans for it.
- Capacity: no queue times or population figures from Blizzard.
- Transfers: Warcraft Tavern's Q&A recap mentions a Character Transfer service, but Blizzard's ruleset post says to create a new character.

Yes, if you share a region, a ruleset and a faction. Horde and Alliance cannot group, and different rulesets cannot group.
