How to Play With Friends in WoW Forever: Same Ruleset, Same Faction, Same Road
To play with friends in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), everyone creates characters on the same ruleset and the same faction, because there is no realm to share. Blizzard says players can group, run dungeons and raid only with others on the same ruleset, and that Horde and Alliance players still cannot group together.
Quick answer: Agree on one ruleset, one faction and a language preference before anyone creates a character. Switching ruleset later means making a new character there. On the PvP ruleset, a player can create characters for only one faction.

In the old way of playing, friends met on a realm. Forever asks them to meet on a road instead: the same ruleset, the same banner, the same language on the signpost. Settle that before the first character is made, and the rest of the journey is shared.
Key facts
- Rulesets: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Hardcore, with Roleplay-PvP arriving at the November 4 launch (Blizzard, updated October 22)
- Hardcore: arrives sometime after launch (Blizzard)
- Cross-ruleset play: not supported for dungeons, raids or other group activities, but battlegrounds may include other rulesets except Hardcore (Blizzard)
- Changing ruleset: create a new character there (Blizzard); characters cannot be transferred between rulesets (Warcraft Tavern), though Blizzard says a Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset
- PvP ruleset: a player can create characters for only one faction, and creation for a faction may be temporarily disabled if the balance tilts (Warcraft Tavern, Blizzard)
- Preferred Online Language: set in Options under Languages and Social, account-wide, with a 24-hour cooldown before changing (Blizzard)
- Account-wide: Collections and Legacy Points are shared across rulesets except Hardcore (Warcraft Tavern)
What do friends need to agree on before creating characters?
Four choices decide whether you can meet. First, the ruleset: Blizzard's news says each ruleset works as a broad community and that cross-ruleset grouping is not supported. Second, the faction: Blizzard says Horde and Alliance cannot group, which keeps the faction divide intact. Third, the language: Blizzard says players can set a Preferred Online Language in Options under Languages and Social. Fourth, the names, which our character name guide covers.
BoostRoom's beginner guide (a marketplace whose site lists boosting services) tells players to agree on faction and ruleset before creating main characters. iTechGuides, on October 19, 2026, suggests exchanging names, confirming ruleset and faction in writing, and planning one short first session.
Can friends on different rulesets or factions play together?
Not in a group. Blizzard says characters on different rulesets cannot group for dungeons, raids or other group activities, and Horde and Alliance cannot group. The exception Blizzard names is battlegrounds, which may include players from other rulesets, except Hardcore, which stays separate.
Sources do not fully agree in tone. Warcraft Tavern's September 13, 2026 report on the BlizzCon announcement says Forever will be realmless "with no barriers to playing with your friends," yet does not explain how friends on different rulesets could group, and a reader comment there asks the same question. Blizzard's own ruleset news is the clearer source.
What if you want to try a different ruleset later?
Warcraft Tavern's character creation guide says each region has one realm per ruleset, characters cannot move between rulesets and there is no cross-play. Blizzard says you must create a new character in the other ruleset. On the PvP ruleset, Blizzard and Warcraft Tavern say a player can create characters for only one faction. See the rulesets guide, the RP-PvP ruleset guide and the Hardcore ruleset guide.
What can friends do together once they are in the world?
Group quests, dungeons and raids, as long as you share a ruleset and faction. Blizzard's camping post says nearby players can use a Basic Campfire campsite, and its Faction Banner benefits members of your faction sitting nearby. For dungeon groups, our dungeon group guide explains the Looking For Group window, and looking for group covers how to ask. To meet more people, see how to make friends.
What is not confirmed yet
- Roleplay-PvP is announced for launch, and Hardcore has no date beyond "after launch."
- No source opened for this guide explains how phasing or layers place friends in the same part of the world beyond Warcraft Tavern's report that Familiar Faces aims to keep guildmates visible to each other.
- The character creation guide is undated and describes the beta, so launch details may differ.
- Whether any in-game tool lets friends of different rulesets play together is not shown in any source opened.
The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made and adds readable zone and quest background for each friend who installs it.
Frequently asked questions
Can you play with friends on different servers in WoW Forever?
There are no servers to choose. Players choose a ruleset, and Blizzard says you can group only with players on the same ruleset and faction.
Can Horde and Alliance friends group in WoW Forever?
No. Blizzard says Horde and Alliance players cannot group together, though Blizzard says Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore allow characters from both factions.
Can you move a character to a friend's ruleset?
Not freely. Warcraft Tavern says characters cannot be transferred between rulesets, and Blizzard says you must create a new character in the ruleset you want. The one exception Blizzard names is a Hardcore character that dies, which can transfer to another ruleset.
Do friends need the same language setting?
Blizzard's Preferred Online Language is an account-wide setting that helps match you with players who share it. It is not described as a requirement for grouping with a friend.
Is there a limit of one faction on the PvP ruleset?
Yes. Blizzard and Warcraft Tavern say a player can create characters for only one faction on the PvP ruleset. Blizzard says Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore allow both.
