Undercity Explained: Forsaken Capital, Quarters, Trainers and the Ruins of Lordaeron

Undercity is the Forsaken capital, a catacomb city beneath the Ruins of Lordaeron in Tirisfal Glades, ruled by Lady Sylvanas Windrunner. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), Warcraft Tavern says it is mostly unchanged from WoW Classic apart from the new Ruins of Lordaeron dungeon at its gates.

Quick answer: Enter through the lifts at the Ruins of Lordaeron or through the Sewers and you arrive in the Trade Quarter at the center. Mage and warlock trainers are in the Magic Quarter, priest and warrior trainers in the War Quarter, and rogue trainers in the Rogues' Quarter.

Undercity at a glance
Undercity is entered by the lifts at the Ruins of Lordaeron or through the Sewers into the Trade Quarter at its center; the Magic Quarter has mage and warlock trainers, the War Quarter has priest and warrior trainers, the Rogues' Quarter has rogue trainers, and the Apothecarium is home to the Royal Apothecary Society; the dungeon Ruins of Lordaeron is listed at levels 15 to 20.

Beneath the ruined capital of Lordaeron, the Forsaken have a city of their own. Canals link its quarters, and the ruins stand above it.

Who built Undercity?

The city was meant for a darker master. Warcraft Wiki says the Scourge began building it as their seat of power in Lordaeron, but the work stopped when Arthas was recalled to Northrend, and Sylvanas Windrunner and the Forsaken rebels took it and finished the catacombs. A 2006 Wikipedia snapshot agrees that Arthas began expanding the caverns and that Sylvanas finished the tunneling. For the people see Forsaken explained, the Sylvanas story, Lordaeron explained and the Arthas story.

What are the quarters of Undercity?

Warcraft Tavern says the city is laid out like a necropolis with four main quarters and a center, each with class and profession trainers. Warcraft Wiki and the 2006 snapshot agree that canals connect the quarters.

  • Trade Quarter: The center. Warcraft Wiki places the bank, the inn and the Horde Auction House here.
  • Magic Quarter, War Quarter and Rogues' Quarter: The trainer quarters, below.
  • Apothecarium: The 2006 snapshot calls it home to the Royal Apothecary Society, with a doorway to the Royal Quarter.
  • Royal Quarter: The snapshot calls it the Forsaken seat of power.

Where are the class trainers in Undercity?

Warcraft Tavern's class trainer guide lists them by quarter. Mage trainers, with the mage portal trainer, and warlock trainers, with the demon trainer, are in the Magic Quarter. Priest and warrior trainers are in the War Quarter. Rogue trainers are in the Rogues' Quarter. It lists no druid, hunter or paladin trainers here, and says Horde paladin trainers "are all new and are limited to Deathknell, Brill, and the Bandarion Keep." Undead can play warrior, mage, rogue, priest, warlock and paladin, with Paladin new in Forever. See the class quests guide.

How do you enter Undercity?

Warcraft Tavern says you enter through the main gates of the Ruins of Lordaeron or through the sewers. Warcraft Wiki says the Trade Quarter lies just past the lifts down from the ruins, and the 2006 snapshot also describes an elevator in the ruins. Warcraft Tavern adds that the elevator became notorious for deaths in Classic Hardcore. Zeppelins from Tirisfal Glades run to Orgrimmar and Grom'gol Base Camp, per its Undead guide, and Warcraft Wiki lists a bat handler in the Trade Quarter. The Tirisfal Glades guide covers the road in, and the Orgrimmar guide the zeppelin's far end.

What is the Ruins of Lordaeron dungeon?

Warcraft Tavern says the dungeon sits in the outer courtyard of the Ruins of Lordaeron and that players from both factions compete to conquer it. It lists levels 15 to 20 in Tirisfal Glades, and its nine new dungeons post says Horde players reach the entrance easily from Undercity while Alliance groups must venture into Horde territory. See the Ruins of Lordaeron guide. The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable background as you stand in each place, and the optional Willo Windows companion answers lore questions by voice.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Forever layout: Warcraft Tavern says Undercity is mostly unchanged, and no source I opened lists any other change.
  • Flight master, Auction House and Bank: Warcraft Tavern does not place them, so the placements above come from Warcraft Wiki, which also covers later expansions.
  • Beta data: The beta had a level 30 cap, and details may change.
