WoW Forever Ruins of Lordaeron: Entrance, Bosses and Story

The Ruins of Lordaeron is a level 15 to 20 dungeon in the ruined capital above the Undercity, and both factions can run it. It has six bosses, including two gauntlet fights you start yourself, and ten quests split between the Horde and the Alliance. The Horde walk in from the Undercity gate; the Alliance face a long road north.

Quick answer: Horde: go through the Undercity's front gate and, before the keep, climb the stairs on the left (about 72.4, 11.6). Alliance: boat to Auberdine, travel through Hillsbrad and Silverpine to Tirisfal Glades. Bosses: Witherfang, The Baron, Viktor the Vile, The Abandoned, Bjork and Rath'mael.

At a glance

  • Level range: 15 to 20 (confirmed by Blizzard for the beta)
  • Location: the former capital of Lordaeron, outside the parts the Forsaken turned into the Undercity, in Tirisfal Glades
  • Factions: primarily Horde, but Alliance players can enter and have their own quests
  • Bosses: six, plus a rare spawn

Entrance: Horde

The entrance is just outside the Undercity. Walk through the front gate and, before you enter the keep, look left and climb the stairs. The coordinates are about 72.4, 11.6.

Entrance: Alliance

The Alliance route is longer, and on PvP realms more dangerous. This is the route Warcraft Tavern gives; check your in-game map as you go:

  1. Take the boat from Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands to Auberdine's northern pier.
  2. The route stops at Southshore in Hillsbrad Foothills.
  3. Travel west along the road to Silverpine Forest.
  4. Head north through Silverpine into Tirisfal Glades.
  5. Move toward the Undercity.

Spirit Healers are sparse on the Alliance road. If you die inside the dungeon, your ghost appears in the courtyard, so enter before you do anything else.

The route and bosses

The dungeon is a U-shaped path that feels confusing at first.

  1. Witherfang: patrols the alley near the entrance with Broodlings. She poisons the tank, which you can cleanse but need not. Warcraft Tavern says she does not currently pull her patrol with her, so you can pull her alone at range. If the Broodlings come too, kill them first.
  2. The Baron: guards a hole in the wall. He has a strong knockback that stuns the target for several seconds, a frontal cone and an area attack on everything in melee range. Tank with your back to a wall, keep melee players behind him and spread ranged players out so the area attack does not hit everyone when he switches targets.
  3. Viktor the Vile (gauntlet): you start this fight by clicking the fireplace in a burned house past the graveyard. Five waves of adds come first, then Viktor, who is a simple melee fight. The challenge is your mana and health through the waves, so start with full mana.
  4. The Abandoned (gauntlet): you start it by interacting with the glowing-eyed statue in the courtyard. Three waves of undead arrive, then the boss. He has an undispellable Frost Armor, casts Frost Nova that cannot be stopped, and uses Drain Life on the tank, which you should interrupt.
  5. Bjork: patrols the north-west. Mostly tank and spank, but he casts an Anti-Magic Shield. Switch to physical damage or wait it out.
  6. Rath'mael: the final boss, in a fenced-off part of the graveyard. He casts Flamestrike centered on the tank. Stay away from the tank during the cast and interrupt it if you can.

A rare Lordaeron Captain can appear on the western side. It is hostile to the Horde but cannot be killed by Alliance characters, according to the guide.

Trash and hazards

  • Ghoul Plague is a low-chance debuff lasting 30 minutes that slows you and cuts your damage. Cure it right away.
  • Skeletal Mages cast Frost Armor on themselves. Dispel it to kill them faster.
  • Wailing Banshees curse you to lower your hit chance.
  • Stone Watchers are gargoyles that pose as statues. When they turn to stone they are immune to physical damage and regenerate, so use magic damage.

Quests

Horde (six): Light's Justice (Morbin Lightbane, Undercity), The New Plague (Theodore Griffs, Undercity), The Wrath of Rath'mael (Deathguard Kristof, Tirisfal Glades), A Frightened Request (Tabetha Heartweaver, Silverpine Forest), Unending Torment (starts from the Abominable Head dropped by The Baron) and Crest of Lordaeron (a crest found at one of five random places in the dungeon, turned in to Oran Snakewrithe in the Undercity).

Alliance (four): Abominable Creatures (Captain Truman, just inside the entrance; return The Baron's head to him on the way out), Bloodied Insignia (collect 10 from undead; turn in to General Marcus Jonathan in Stormwind), Remember That I Love You (a Crumpled Paper near Edward's body in the graveyard) and Crest of Lordaeron (turn in to Lady Dena Kennedy in Stormwind).

Alliance players should run out of the dungeon rather than use a Hearthstone, so they can return the Head of the Baron to Captain Truman.

The story, in brief

Lordaeron was the great human kingdom whose fall defined the Third War. In this dungeon you fight through the ruined capital itself, past ghouls, banshees and the lingering dead. Read What Happened to Lordaeron? first if you want the history behind the ruins, or the three wars recap for the bigger picture.

The free Lore Forever add-on adds readable background while you play, and is fan-made.

Rewards and preparation

Blizzard says new dungeon items follow a new itemization rule and that every dropped item unlocks its transmog appearance for each eligible looter. Most dungeon XP sits in dungeon-tied questlines, so repeat runs give much less. Bring full mana for the two gauntlets, a healer who is ready, interrupts for Drain Life and Flamestrike, and a way to cure Ghoul Plague. For the other dungeons, see the dungeons overview.
