Cult of the Damned

The Cult of the Damned is a secretive cabal of mortal zealots, necromancers, and aristocrats devoted to the Lich King. Formed in northern Lordaeron prior to the Third War, its members poisoned the grain supplies that spawned the Scourge and engineered the downfall of humanity's greatest kingdom. Today, the surviving cultists manage the plague cauldrons and necromantic academies across the Plaguelands while actively infiltrating the cities of the living.

A Sickness in the Soul

The Cult of the Damned was forged by the exiled Archmage Kel'Thuzad after he answered the telepathic whispers of the Lich King emanating from the Frozen Throne. Returning to Lordaeron with vast wealth and forbidden dark arts, Kel'Thuzad offered two false gospels: to the desperate, impoverished lower classes, he promised social equality and liberation from misery; to the wealthy landowners, such as the noble House of Barov, he promised eternal life and an unshakeable grip upon their domains. In truth, both the destitute and the affluent were cattle intended for slaughter, bound into a death cult designed to betray their homeland from the inside.

The Poisoned Harvest

Operating in complete secrecy from the dungeons beneath Caer Darrow, the cultists honed their necrotic craft, built hulking abominations, and perfected the Plague of Undeath brought south from Northrend. They struck at Lordaeron's breadbasket, contaminating the grain stores at Andorhal. As tainted flour traveled through regular merchant routes to hearths across the Eastweald, commoners sickened and died within days, only to rise as shambling thralls under the Lich King's telepathic lash. When Prince Arthas slaughtered Kel'Thuzad in Andorhal, the cultist network was already so deeply rooted that the kingdom's doom was sealed.

The Present Threat

Though Arthas sailed to Northrend and ascended the Frozen Throne, the Cult of the Damned remains fully operational in northern Lordaeron under the command of the resurrected archlich Kel'Thuzad. From the shadows of Stratholme and the halls of Scholomance, living cultists perform dark rites, maintain the toxic plague cauldrons across the ruined farmsteads, and attempt to assassinate Scarlet Crusaders and Forsaken alike. Because they still breathe, these acolytes can walk unnoticed through living settlements, poisoning wells, sabotaging supply lines, and grooming new recruits to feed the Scourge machine.
