WoW Forever on Mac, Steam Deck and Linux: What Is Confirmed

World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) is listed for Windows and macOS only: Gfinity says it will be available on both, and the Warcraft Wiki's infobox names the same two, while no source I opened names a Linux or Steam Deck version. Forum players reported running the beta on a Steam Deck and on Linux through Proton, and Mac players reported a restart and poor performance, but no Blizzard reply was visible in the threads I opened. The beta ended on October 23, 2026, so launch behavior is untested.

Quick answer: Mac is a listed platform, with Mac figures from TimeSaver that I could not confirm on any Blizzard page. Steam Deck and Linux are not listed; community methods exist and are used at your own risk. Consoles have no native version, per Gfinity.

Where WoW Forever is listed to run as of October 30, 2026: Windows and macOS listed by Gfinity and the Warcraft Wiki, with Mac problems reported by beta players; Linux not listed, with players running the beta through Proton; Steam Deck not listed, with one forum player saying it ran well; consoles with no native version according to Gfinity.

Azeroth is walked on more machines than the box lists.

Key facts

  • Listed platforms: Windows and macOS (Gfinity, September 14; Warcraft Wiki infobox)
  • Mac figures: macOS 12 and an Apple M2 minimum (TimeSaver, September 28); HostedGG (October 3) calls them unverified
  • Linux and Steam Deck: no Blizzard statement in the sources opened; player reports on Blizzard's forums, September 18 to October 1
  • Storage: 128 GB of free SSD space (TimeSaver, mein-mmo, Gfinity); see how to download and install
  • Controllers: a built-in Gamepad UI labelled alpha (Warcraft Tavern, September 13)

Does WoW Forever run on a Mac?

It is a listed platform, per Gfinity and the Warcraft Wiki. TimeSaver gives a Mac minimum of macOS 12, an Apple M2 and 8 GB of RAM, recommends macOS 15, an M4 and 16 GB, and warns that M1 and Intel Macs may fall below the minimum. HostedGG says those figures have no Blizzard source, and mein-mmo's list of Blizzard's requirements covers Windows only.

What went wrong on Mac in the beta?

Players reported a restart and poor performance; no Blizzard reply appears in the threads I opened. On September 17 a user on a 2024 M4 iMac said the whole Mac restarted at Base Game Quality 6, and could enter the world at quality 1 in windowed mode. In a September 18 thread, "Mac client is a mess," players described poor performance; one suggested setting Secondary Lighting to Fair, the opener said that did not fix it, and a reply to the question of whether Blizzard had acknowledged the problem said no. TimeSaver says some MacBook players find modern WoW smoother than the beta, blaming an unfinished Metal path. See graphics settings.

Can you play WoW Forever on a Steam Deck?

No Blizzard statement says so, and one player says it works. A September 21 forum post says "forever works really well on steam deck," after a few extra install steps, with a Bluetooth keyboard for typing and a gamepad UI that worked well. An October 1 poster who ran a modern WoW expansion on a Steam Deck without anti-cheat trouble had not tested Forever and noted that Battle.net is not meant to work officially on Linux.

How do players run WoW Forever on Linux?

With community tools, at their own risk. A September 18 forum tutorial, tested on CachyOS, runs it through the Faugus launcher with a GE-Proton build, a launch argument and two environment settings, with the in-game graphics slider at 1 to avoid GPU hangs; it reports that Secondary Lighting caused crashes, and other commenters had mixed results. An Arch Linux user posting that day said the game ran great. Lutris lists a Wine-based Battle.net installer, though its platform list shows only macOS and Windows.

Does it work with a controller or handheld?

Partly confirmed. Warcraft Tavern (September 13) says the BlizzCon demo included built-in gamepad support, labelled alpha, the first official controller option in any version of WoW; see controller support. One caution: fine print on Blizzard's World of Warcraft homepage, read on October 30, says under the Windows and macOS minimum requirements that keyboard and mouse are required and other input devices are not supported. The page does not label those requirements by product, so it does not say whether that applies to Forever.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Blizzard's own Forever requirements for Mac, which I could not open, and any Blizzard position on Linux, Proton or Steam Deck.
  • Whether the Mac problems are fixed at launch on November 4, 2026, and whether the gamepad UI is still alpha.

The free Lore Forever add-on works on Mac, while Willo runs on Windows 10 or 11 only for now; the add-on is fan-made and not affiliated with Blizzard.
