Need vs Greed in WoW Forever: How Group Loot Rolls Work

In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), a group roll on loot most likely follows the original game's Need and Greed rule as Warcraft Wiki describes it: Need players roll first, Greed players roll only if nobody needs the item, and the highest roll wins. That is the wiki's account of the original game; no source I opened lists the loot methods Forever's party window offers. Warcraft Tavern reports that Blizzard ruled out GDKP gold-bid runs at a September 17, 2026 developer Q&A.

Quick answer: Per Warcraft Wiki's general etiquette, click Need for gear you will use soon, Greed for anything you would sell, and Pass when you want nothing. Launch is November 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST (Blizzard).

Group loot roll order per Warcraft Wiki's original-game rule, not confirmed for WoW Forever: items at or above the leader's threshold are rolled for, Need players roll first, Greed players roll if nobody needs the item, and if everyone closes the window anyone can loot it.
The group loot roll in order, from Warcraft Wiki's account of the original game.

A boss falls, his belongings lie open, and five adventurers eye the same shining item. The game settles that old argument with a small window and a pair of dice.

Key facts

  • Need and Greed order: Need rolls first, Greed only if nobody needed; high roll wins (Warcraft Wiki, original-era rule)
  • Group Loot threshold: set by the party leader; uncommon and better by default (Warcraft Wiki)
  • GDKP: barred in North America and Europe, still allowed in Korea (Warcraft Tavern; Inven Global, October 15, 2026)

What do Need, Greed and Pass mean in WoW Forever?

Each button is a promise about the item. Warcraft Wiki's Loot page, which is general and not specific to Forever, calls it the generally accepted policy to Need on items you plan to use now or in the near future, one or two levels ahead. Its current Need before Greed page, which describes modern WoW, says Greed normally means you want to sell or disenchant, Pass means no interest, and ties are settled by a random number from 1 to 100. The AutoLootForever add-on, listed for Forever's 1.60.1 client, can roll Need, Greed or Pass on group loot windows, which suggests Forever offers all three.

How is the winner picked?

In the Loot page's account, dated to patch 1.7.0 of the original game, players who select Need roll first and the high roller wins. If no one selects Need, the Greed players roll and the highest roll wins. If everyone closes the window, anyone in the group can loot the item.

What are Group Loot, Round Robin, Master Loot and Free-for-All?

Warcraft Wiki defines these party loot methods for the original game and says modern WoW removed them in patch 8.0.1. Free-for-all is first come, first served; round robin has members take turns looting corpses; Group Loot rolls for items at or above a leader-set quality threshold; Master Loot has one person, chosen by the leader, loot every corpse and hand out the loot.

For Forever, the Forever Loot Manager add-on says it needs master loot with the raid leader as master looter, but Guild Order's page, updated September 26, says the methods available to a raid leader have not been described in Blizzard's articles. Treat the list as the original game's, not a confirmed Forever menu.

Is GDKP allowed in WoW Forever?

Not in North America and Europe. Warcraft Tavern's recap of the September 17 developer Q&A says the players "were told in no uncertain terms" that Forever will not allow GDKP raiding. Inven Global, citing an October 8 interview with Blizzard's Clay Stone, reports that the ban covers only North America and Europe, so Korea and other regions can still run GDKP raids. See economy and gold sellers.

How do quest drops and dungeon drops work in a group?

Warcraft Tavern's September 26 report relays a post from senior game designer Josh Greenfield: the team added functionality to round-robin quest items to grouped players, making it "less feast or famine." Its dungeons guide says every dungeon drop unlocks its appearance for every eligible looter. See dungeon groups.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Which loot methods the Forever party window offers.
  • Whether Forever's Need follows the older rule; Warcraft Wiki says before patch 3.3.0 it considered only whether you could use the item now.
  • Everything here comes from the beta (level 30 cap); the launch cap is 60.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with loot choices?

The free Lore Forever add-on, fan-made and not affiliated with Blizzard, adds tooltip lines saying when a quest you can still do wants an item, or when it starts a quest. Willo, a Windows companion app, lets you ask out loud what a loot term means and keep a notebook of to-dos. She is free to start with 50 answers a day, works without the add-on, and can be wrong.
