WoW Forever Gold Buying: Bans, Trade Holds and No GDKP

Blizzard says it will punish gold buyers as well as sellers in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), will not allow GDKP raid auctions, and now uses "Temporary Economy Holds" that restrict trade, mail, guild banks and the Auction House on accounts suspected of real money trading. The game launches on November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST, per Blizzard.

Quick answer: Do not buy gold, be wary of gifts from strangers, and expect no GDKP runs. Blizzard says illicit gold is removed and accounts can be closed. Details are as of October 29, 2026.

Timeline of WoW Forever gold rules: no GDKP September 17, gold buyer post September 28, planned trade warning October 1, beta closure figures October 8 to 12, Temporary Economy Holds October 13, launch November 4.
Dated steps in the anti-gold-buying rules, from the Q&A to launch.

Every adventurer needs coin for the road: reagents, repairs, a trainer's fee. Blizzard wants it earned between Goldshire and the Barrens, not bought from a stranger in a whisper.

Key facts

  • GDKP: not allowed (developer Q&A, September 17, via Warcraft Tavern)
  • Temporary Economy Hold: restricts trade, mail, guild banks and the Auction House; posted October 13, not labelled beta-only or live (Blizzard forums)
  • Beta closures: about 3,700 accounts (mein-mmo; TimeSaver)

What has Blizzard said about gold buying in WoW Forever?

Dexerto, reporting on a recent developer Q&A, quotes senior game designer Josh Greenfield saying Blizzard will "very aggressively punish gold buyers" and admitting it had been too lenient before.

In a forum post Warcraft Tavern reported on September 28, Blizzard's Kaivax wrote that "Real money transactions (RMT) are not acceptable in World of Warcraft." Illicit gold is removed from the recipient, account closure is possible, and a recipient who knew or should have known the gold was illegitimate may face account actions. The post urges caution with gifts from strangers and one-sided trades.

What is a Temporary Economy Hold?

Kaivax's October 13 post, "Temporary Economy Holds For RMT," calls the system new. An account suspected of selling or receiving illicit gains can have restricted use of trade, mail, guild banks and the Auction House. The post gives no fixed length and describes no appeal process. The hold lifts automatically if the activity is found not to be real money trading, false positives are possible, and no permanent strike follows unless real money trading is proven.

The post does not say whether holds are beta-only or live; it says Blizzard may deploy these systems to all versions of World of Warcraft if they prove successful. Warcraft Tavern's October 1 report quotes Blizzard saying it will keep acting against RMT in both the beta and the live game after launch.

How many accounts has Blizzard banned?

About 3,700 in the beta. mein-mmo wrote on October 12 that Greenfield told Blizzard's podcast over 2,100 gold-buyer accounts and over 1,600 seller or bot accounts had been closed. TimeSaver dates his statement to October 8 and says almost 1,600 sellers.

Headlines round up: mein-mmo's and Icy Veins' say nearly 4,000, and Massively Overpowered's says over 4,000 (I could not open those two pages). mein-mmo's text says 3,700, and TimeSaver says the rounding came from the press, not Blizzard.

Is GDKP allowed in WoW Forever?

No. Warcraft Tavern's account of the September 17 Q&A says the developers will not allow GDKP, auctioning raid loot to the highest bidder, citing a more social game and less pressure on newer players to buy gold. See the raids guide and raids open December 9.

How do you earn gold safely?

Warcraft Tavern advises legitimate in-game methods only, and says Blizzard plans a trade warning about gold from suspicious sources (October 1; not confirmed live). Our gold making guide, gold farming guide and Auction House guide cover the legitimate routes.

What is not confirmed yet

Whether holds are limited to the beta, how long a hold lasts, how to appeal, and whether the trade warning is live.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?

The free Lore Forever add-on tells you, in an item's tooltip, when a quest you can still do wants it, so you do not sell it by mistake. Willo, a Windows companion app, answers questions you ask out loud, and her notebook keeps per-character to-dos. On the Hero plan and up she can remind you to check your auction in fifteen minutes. Willo is free to start with 50 answers a day, can be wrong, and the add-on is optional for her.
