How to Avoid Ganking in WoW Forever: PvP Ruleset Survival
The surest way to avoid ganking in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) is to create your character on the Normal ruleset, where Blizzard says you fight other players "at your own discretion"; on the PvP ruleset, Blizzard says you are almost always at risk of attack. Blizzard says you cannot freely hop between rulesets, so the choice is made at character creation, as of November 6, 2026.
Quick answer: On Normal or Roleplaying you flag yourself with /pvp (Icy Veins); Method and Wowhead add that entering enemy territory, such as a capital, or attacking a flagged target flags you too. On PvP rulesets you are flagged automatically in contested and enemy zones (Icy Veins, Wowhead). Sourced tips: group up, watch your surroundings, avoid zone lines.

Key facts
- Normal: you fight other players at your own discretion (Blizzard, October 22)
- PvP and Roleplay-PvP: almost always at risk of attack (Blizzard)
- Flagging on Normal: type /pvp or right-click your portrait (Icy Veins)
- Switching rulesets: no free hopping; you create a new character (Blizzard)
- Battlegrounds: players from other rulesets can meet there (Blizzard)
Can you avoid ganking in WoW Forever?
Yes, by ruleset. German outlet mein-mmo (November 3) calls Normal the safe pick in about nine of ten cases for players who have never played WoW. Method says that on PvP you can expect to get "jumped on, ganked, and corpse-camped." ConquestCapped, a boosting-service site whose guide has no valid date, says you can never switch PvP off there. See which ruleset to pick and rulesets.
How does flagging work on each ruleset?
Icy Veins' PvP overview (September, before launch) says that on Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore you flag manually with /pvp or by right-clicking your portrait. On the PvP ruleset you are flagged automatically in contested or enemy zones, and it counts any zone above level 15 as contested. Method adds that on Normal you are also flagged by entering the other faction's area, such as a capital, or by attacking a flagged target such as town guards, and that the flag drops after 5 minutes without PvP combat. Wowhead (updated October 24) agrees that enemy territory flags you on Normal. On PvP, Wowhead says friendly territory stays unflagged unless you type /pvp or attack an enemy player; Method says you are flagged everywhere except sanctuaries and your own faction's areas. More in world PvP and honor.
What do guides say about surviving a gank?
Warcraft Tavern's guide to avoiding and escaping ganks (undated) is written for WoW Classic, not Forever, so this is general advice. Its tips include:
- Level with others; a party adds crowd control.
- Turn off camera follow and bind a Camera Flip key to look behind you.
- Use a /wave or /salute to defuse a fight.
- Sit with your back to a wall; avoid busy roads.
- Enter new zones a few levels above the minimum and check defense chat first.
How do layers and groups affect ganking?
ConquestCapped says leaving a group can send you back to your own layer mid-fight, and advises forming the party before boarding boats or leaving capitals and not fighting or regrouping on zone lines. See layering explained. Blizzard says Horde and Alliance cannot group and groups stay within one ruleset.
What is not confirmed yet
- Whether Blizzard will penalize killing much lower-level players. A player-started November 4 thread on Blizzard's forums suggests ideas; one poster there says grey-level kills give no honor "same as now," a single player's claim.
- The exact contested-zone list for the PvP ruleset.
- Whether Classic-era tips work the same in Forever.
How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?
Neither stops a gank. The free Lore Forever add-on (fan-made, no internet access, narration uses generated voices) tells the story of each zone you enter, and Willo lets you ask out loud what to do next. Willo is a separate companion app for Windows 10 or 11 and Apple Silicon Macs (macOS 12 or later), per her page; her FAQ and the Lore Forever FAQ say Windows and Mac, though CurseForge still calls her a Windows app. She is free to start with 50 answers a day and can be wrong, so check zone danger against the sources above. Both are fan-made and not affiliated with Blizzard. See also battlegrounds.

Mostly if you flag with /pvp, per Icy Veins. Method and Wowhead add that entering enemy territory or attacking a flagged target also flags you.
