WoW Forever "Different Phase" Fix: Get in the Same Phase
In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), "you can't see this player because they are in a different phase" means, according to launch-week player guides, that you and the other player are in different copies of the same zone, which Blizzard's beta notes call "world instances." Guides say to join the same party, then press Refresh Now (or Reset Now) on the world-refresh notice, out of combat. As of November 5, 2026, no Blizzard staff post I opened explains the message.
Quick answer: Share a ruleset and faction, party up, leave combat, accept the refresh prompt. With no prompt, players say relogging the non-leader or visiting a capital city worked for some groups, not others.

Key facts
- Grouping rule: same ruleset; Horde and Alliance cannot group (Blizzard)
- Realms: Forever has no realm list; you pick a ruleset (TimeSaver, Blizzard)
- Beta notes: a party change "may transfer players to a different world instance" (Blizzard, September 24)
- Combat: the "refresh world" prompt cannot be accepted in combat (Blizzard, October 16)
What does "different phase" mean in WoW Forever?
Modern WoW uses phasing for quest progress: Warcraft Wiki says it changes outdoor areas based on what a player has done. That is not what players describe. A November 5 Blizzard forum thread has friends in the same zone told they are in a different phase, and one player's partner stood right beside them in another layer.
TimeSaver quotes Blizzard's Greenfield that each zone, or small group of zones, is one layer, and notes the beta notes call the copies "world instances." Warcraft Wiki says layering eases overcrowding and was used at the launch of WoW Classic. So you are asking to be moved to your friend's layer; see layering explained.
How do you get in the same phase as a friend?
WoW Handbook (November 4) and GamerBlurb (November 4 and 5) give similar steps, citing player reports:
- Confirm you are on the same ruleset and faction.
- Join the same party (
/invitewith the character name works, GamerBlurb says). - Look for the world-refresh notice and click Refresh Now or Reset Now, once out of combat.
- If you closed the panel, WoW Handbook says the arrow near the chat box on the left reopens it.
- Check whether your friend now appears.
The outlets disagree on the wait. TimeSaver quotes the beta prompt as "The world around you will refresh in 5 Minutes," with Refresh Now and Okay buttons; GamerBlurb describes a Reset World Instance popup with about 30 minutes.
What if there is no refresh button?
Everything here is player-reported, not official:
- GamerBlurb: keep the party leader online while the other player logs out and back in. Some forum players said relogging fixed it; another tried twice without success.
- One forum player said walking the group through the Stormwind Dwarven District tram portal put them on one layer; another said going to Ironforge and leaving worked.
- A September beta thread suggests
/whowith the character name, then right-click the name in chat to invite. - GamerBlurb reports one group waited about two hours for a world reset.
Is it phasing, layering, ruleset or realm?
A ruleset or faction mismatch is different: Blizzard says cross-ruleset grouping is not supported and Horde and Alliance cannot group, so no refresh will join you. Realm is not a factor, since Forever has no realm list. Layering is the cause people describe; modern quest phasing is not.
What is not confirmed yet
- Blizzard's own wording for the message, and the launch refresh timer.
- Whether any single fix works reliably; reports conflict. Per TimeSaver, Blizzard's Frank Williams said players are generally not going to just get moved on joining a group.
Can the Lore Forever add-on or Willo help?
Neither changes your layer. The free Lore Forever add-on gives quest and zone stories while you wait; Willo, a separate companion app (Windows 10 or 11, with an Apple Silicon Mac download for macOS 12 or later on her page), can be asked out loud what a notice means. She is free to start with 50 answers a day, can be wrong and is not official. Both are fan-made, not affiliated with Blizzard. More: how to play with friends.
Frequently asked questions
What does "you can't see this player because they are in a different phase" mean in WoW Forever?
Per launch-week player guides, you are in a different copy of the zone (a world instance or layer) than that player.
How do I get in the same phase as my friend in WoW Forever?
Party up, leave combat and click Refresh Now on the world-refresh notice, as WoW Handbook and GamerBlurb describe.
Why is my friend in my party but invisible?
GamerBlurb says being in the same party does not guarantee the same phase of the world.
Can Horde and Alliance be in the same phase?
They cannot group, says Blizzard, so they cannot use the party fix.
Does relogging fix the different phase message?
It helped some forum players and not others; it is a workaround.
