Crowd Control in WoW Forever: Markers, Classes and Rules

Crowd control in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) means spells and abilities that take an enemy out of a fight for a while, such as a Mage's Polymorph or a Rogue's Sap, so the group fights fewer enemies at once. Warcraft Wiki defines it as abilities that "limit an opponent's ability to participate in a fight," and Warcraft Tavern's dungeon guide pairs each class's tool with a raid marker.

Quick answer: Mark the target, cast the control and keep damage off it, because damage can break a control (any damage breaks Sap, per Warcraft Wiki). Mages, Rogues, Hunters, Priests, Warlocks and Druids have tools; Warriors and Paladins have little. Agree markers before the pull; two sources assign them differently.

Target markers and paired crowd control: Warcraft Tavern assigns Skull and Cross to kill order, Circle to Rogue Sap, Diamond to Warlock Banish, Seduce or Fear, Moon to Mage Polymorph, Square to Hunter Frost Trap, Star to Priest Shackle Undead and Triangle to Druid Hibernate; Warcraft Wiki's example puts Sap on Star and Shackle Undead on Circle.

A pack of five is a brawl, and a pack of five with two of them asleep is a plan.

Key facts

  • Mage: Polymorph, which Blizzard calls one of the best crowd control abilities (Blizzard)
  • Rogue: Sap no longer breaks Stealth (Warcraft Tavern, reporting Blizzard)
  • Hunter: traps work in combat, with a 30-second cooldown (Kami Labs)
  • Little or none: Warriors; Paladins have Hammer of Justice only (Warcraft Tavern); Shamans lack an effective crowd control (Blizzard)
  • Bosses: all raid bosses are immune to crowd control (Warcraft Wiki, general page; Forever unconfirmed)

What is crowd control in WoW Forever?

Warcraft Wiki, in a page not specific to Forever, splits it into loss of control (charm, fear, stun, incapacitate, sleep, disorient, polymorph, banish, horror) and positional control (snare, root, daze). It says an incapacitate is a stun that breaks on damage, and that elite enemies may or may not resist or be immune to a given effect.

Which markers go with which crowd control?

Warcraft Tavern's dungeon guide pairs its target markers with kill order and crowd control, and says to clarify them with your group:

  • Skull is killed first and Cross second.
  • Circle: Sap (Rogue). Diamond: Banish, Seduce or Fear (Warlock). Moon: Polymorph (Mage).
  • Square: Frost Trap (Hunter). Star: Shackle Undead (Priest). Triangle: Hibernate (Druid).

Warcraft Wiki's Target marker page gives a differing example convention: Star for the Rogue's Sap, Circle for the Priest's Shackle Undead or Mind Control, Square for Freezing Trap, Triangle for Hibernate, Entangling Roots or Hex. Neither is a rule of the game.

Which classes have crowd control in WoW Forever?

  • Mage: Blizzard says Mages possess one of the best crowd control abilities in Polymorph. Warcraft Wiki says it works on Beasts, Humanoids and Critters in modern WoW, and that in Classic any damage turns the target back.
  • Rogue: Warcraft Tavern calls Sap a Rogue's best friend with groups of enemies. Warcraft Wiki's Forever entry gives level 10 and 25 seconds, ending on any damage.
  • Hunter: traps work in combat at a 30-second cooldown, and Hunters can neither stun nor interrupt (Kami Labs).
  • Druid: Kami Labs says Druid control is weaker and less reliable, though Entangling Roots works indoors.
  • Priest: Blizzard lists two racial tools: the Dwarf's Chastise immobilizes a Humanoid for 2 seconds, and the Gnome's Confounding Flash confuses up to 5 enemies for 3 seconds.
  • Warlock: Warcraft Tavern's Warlock guide says Curse of Recklessness can stop Fear from pulling extra enemies by preventing fleeing.
  • Paladin, Warrior, Shaman: little. See best class for dungeons.

What rules should a group follow?

Warcraft Wiki's PvE advice, flagged as out of date, is to keep repeatable crowd control last in the kill order, pull fighting enemies away from controlled ones so area damage does not break the effect, and pick another target if a control fails. mein-mmo (October 21) says humanoids run away when heavily damaged and can alert nearby enemies. See how to tank your first dungeon.

What happens when enemies crowd-control you?

Warcraft Tavern says the Hall of Thanes boss Durgen Dirgehammer casts an area fear, so a Shaman can drop Tremor Totem first, and that Wailing Caverns bosses cast Sleep and Druid's Slumber. Its Restoration Shaman guide says Tremor Totem removes fear, sleep and charm. Next: threat and aggro explained.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Forever durations and ranks: Warcraft Wiki's Polymorph page lists durations for other versions and none for Forever.
  • Whether general Warcraft Wiki rules, such as raid-boss immunity, hold in Forever.
  • Which marker convention players will use.
  • Levels 31 to 60: the beta ended at level 30, and the launch cap is 60.
