Tiragarde Keep and Kul Tiras Explained: The Admiral's Fort in Durotar

Tiragarde Keep is the ruined Kul Tiras fortress on the Scuttle Coast in eastern Durotar, hastily built by Admiral Daelin Proudmoore during his offensive against the orcs and held in World of Warcraft's first year by Lieutenant Benedict and a garrison of Kul Tiras marines. In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), it is the place where Horde players in Durotar go to settle the Admiral's last campaign.

Quick answer: Tiragarde Keep stands south of the Scuttle Coast beach, which lies south-east of Razor Hill. Its Kul Tiras soldiers refused to give up after Daelin died. Horde players are sent by Gar'Thok to "Vanquish the Betrayers" there, a level 7 quest that Warcraft Wiki says remains in Forever.

Tiragarde Keep, Kul Tiras and Daelin Proudmoore
A six-step chain: Daelin Proudmoore builds an armada and leads Alliance ships in the Second War, he sails to Kalimdor and takes control of Theramore, his men hastily build Tiragarde Keep on the Scuttle Coast, Daelin is killed in the Horde's assault on Theramore, Lieutenant Benedict keeps the keep, and Horde players are sent by Gar'Thok to vanquish its garrison. Sources: Warcraft Wiki, Blizzard Watch, Engadget.

Wrecks lie along the Scuttle Coast like the ribs of drowned animals, and above them a keep made in a hurry still flies colors no one has taken down. The soldiers inside believe they are still at war. Perhaps they are right.

Where is Tiragarde Keep?

Warcraft Wiki places Tiragarde Keep in east-central Durotar, in the Scuttle Coast. Warcraft Wiki's Scuttle Coast page says the shore lies south-east of Razor Hill and north of the keep, and that Kul Tiras ships wrecked on its rocks during the battles against Daelin's fleet. Read Durotar in WoW Forever for the zone.

Who built Tiragarde Keep, and who holds it?

Warcraft Wiki says Admiral Daelin Proudmoore hastily constructed Tiragarde Keep as part of his offensive, which the Horde repelled. It says that after his fleet went silent Lieutenant Benedict was sent to retake the keep, and it lists Benedict as a level 8 commander, with Kul Tiras Marines and Sailors patrolling the ramparts.

What is the Vanquish the Betrayers quest?

Warcraft Wiki says Gar'Thok in Razor Hill gives the Horde quest Vanquish the Betrayers, a level 7 quest that needs level 3. You kill 10 Kul Tiras Sailors, 8 Kul Tiras Marines and Lieutenant Benedict, who is usually accompanied by three marines. The reward is 625 experience and 250 reputation each with Orgrimmar and the Darkspear Trolls, and the chain continues with From The Wreckage..., level 8. Benedict drops a key to a chest on the keep's third floor, and the chest holds an Aged Envelope with orders from the dead Admiral.

Who was Daelin Proudmoore?

Blizzard Watch says Daelin led the Alliance's naval forces in the Second War and was a longtime friend of Anduin Lothar, and that his fleet destroyed the first Horde vessels. Warcraft Wiki's Kul Tiran fleet page says Daelin built an armada in the Second War. In the Third War, Blizzard Watch and Engadget say he followed his daughter Jaina to Kalimdor and took control of Theramore, and that the Horde killed him in their assault on the city. Engadget's Theramore column describes that assault as an invasion of Horde forces under Rexxar. Read Who Is Jaina Proudmoore? and The Story of Thrall for the people on the other side.

What happened to Kul Tiras?

Blizzard Watch says Kul Tiras called for vengeance but the other human kingdoms did not answer, and the nation withdrew from the wider Alliance. Engadget says no one had seen or heard from Kul Tiras since before Daelin's death, and Warcraft Wiki describes it as an archipelago in the Great Sea, west of the Eastern Kingdoms. Later in the timeline, outside WoW Forever, Kul Tiras rejoins the world stage and the keep is rebuilt.

How does this fit into WoW Forever?

Warcraft Wiki's Durotar quests page lists Vanquish the Betrayers and says it was removed in patch 4.0.3a but remains in Classic and Forever; its Lieutenant Benedict page says the same of him. The free Lore Forever add-on shows readable zone and quest background as you play, and the optional Willo voice companion can answer lore questions. Both are fan-made.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Blizzard has not published a Forever quest list for Durotar, so the quest details come from Warcraft Wiki's pages, which say the quest remains in Forever.
  • Sources differ on Jaina's part in her father's death: Blizzard Watch says she stood aside, while Engadget says she helped the assault that ended his life.
  • Lore Forever found the quest's reward numbers and Benedict's level only on Warcraft Wiki.
