WoW Forever Servers: No Realms to Pick, Only Rulesets

World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever) has no realm list: at character creation you choose a ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or Roleplay-PvP at launch), and Method and Warcraft Wiki describe the result as one large shared server per ruleset in each region. Blizzard's own wording is "ruleset" and "ecosystem," not "server" or "mega-realm."

Quick answer: There are no realms to choose between. Pick a ruleset and play with everyone in your region who picked it. Oceanic players will mostly play on Australian servers, per a developer Q&A, and may see higher ping when grouped with distant players. Details are as of October 29, 2026.

How a WoW Forever character is placed: choose a region through your account, choose a ruleset instead of a realm, share one large world with that ruleset in your region, get sorted into layers, and group only with the same ruleset and faction.
From region to ruleset to layer to party, as described by Blizzard, Method and Warcraft Tavern.

Adventurers once began by choosing a realm and hoping it was the busy one. Forever asks a different first question: how do you want to walk the road?

Key facts

  • Realm list: none; players move away from the traditional realm-selection screen (Blizzard)
  • Rulesets at launch: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Roleplay-PvP, added in an October 22 update; Hardcore comes after launch (Blizzard)
  • Server shape: one shared server per ruleset per region (Method, October 24; Warcraft Wiki)
  • Regions named for name reservation: Europe, North America, Korea and Taiwan (Warcraft Tavern)
  • Oceanic players: mostly on Australian servers (developer Q&A, September 17, via Warcraft Tavern)
  • Language: a Preferred Online Language setting, account-wide with a 24-hour cooldown (Blizzard)

Are there servers or realms in WoW Forever?

Not in the old sense. Blizzard's rulesets post says players choose a ruleset instead of a realm, and that each ruleset is its own large ecosystem. It never uses the words "server" or "mega-realm." Blizzard's stated aim is to reduce the pressure of choosing the right launch realm.

Other sources fill in the shape. Warcraft Wiki says players are split by ruleset onto one "mega-realm" per ruleset per region. Warcraft Tavern also uses "mega-realms," and Method calls them region-based megaservers, writing that each ruleset exists as a separate server within the region. Our mega-realms guide and rulesets guide cover the details.

How do regions work in WoW Forever?

According to Method, each region needs its own WoW account and subscription, and progress is not shared. Warcraft Tavern's name reservation guide lists four regions with their own start times: Europe, North America, Korea and Taiwan. Names are unique per region, and the full first-and-last-name pair must be unique across all rulesets in that region.

No source I opened shows cross-region play or names an Oceanic region, so confirm yours when you create a character.

Where do Oceanic players play, and what about ping?

Warcraft Tavern's account of the September 17 developer Q&A says Oceanic players will predominately play on Australian servers, and that occasional groups with players from farther away might introduce a higher ping than you are used to. That is one source, and I found no Blizzard page naming an Oceanic region. See our Australia launch time guide.

How do layers and language decide who you see?

With no realms, crowds are managed by layers. Method says layers are added and removed with population, so you do not see every player, and that your language setting, your guild and players you have grouped with also shape who you see. Warcraft Tavern reports three matching principles: Familiar Faces, preferred language and PvP faction balance. Kami Labs reports that Blizzard's Clay Stone said on October 23 that "there will always be some amount of layering," and that fixes are promised so boat and zeppelin travelers and large groups entering capitals are no longer split, with no date given. See the Familiar Faces guide and the layering explainer.

Who can you group with?

Blizzard says you can group, run dungeons and raid only with players on the same ruleset, and that Horde and Alliance cannot group. Battlegrounds can include other rulesets, except Hardcore. Switching rulesets means creating a new character; see whether you can switch rulesets.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Capacity, queue times and layer limits: no source I opened publishes numbers.
  • Whether Oceania is a separate region; the Australian-servers claim has one source.
  • Whether the October 23 layering fixes are live at launch.
