Best Race for Paladin in WoW Forever: What Guides Say

Three races can play a Paladin in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever): Human and Dwarf for the Alliance, Undead for the Horde, and the guides we read split between Human and Dwarf on the Alliance side. The Horde has no choice to make, because Undead is the one Horde race that can take the Light.

Quick answer: For Alliance Paladins, Warcraft Tavern favors Human, while TimeSaver (updated October 29) gives Human to Holy and Dwarf to Retribution. Racial abilities were retuned on October 16, 26 and 27, so older rankings may be out of date.

Every Paladin begins with a vow, and the vow does not ask where you were born. A race is only the banner you carry it under, and in Forever that banner flies on both sides of the war.

Key facts

  • Races that can be Paladin: Human, Dwarf, Undead (Method; Gfinity)
  • Horde option: Undead only; the class was Alliance-only in Classic (Method)
  • Alliance picks: Human (Warcraft Tavern, GamesFuze); Human or Dwarf (Gamer Guides, mein-mmo, TimeSaver)
  • October 26 changes: Human Ruthless crit 2% to 1%, Human Spirit 5% to 10%, Dwarf Earth Fury removed, Dwarf gains +1% hit (Warcraft Tavern; Gamerfuzion)
  • Older picks: GamesFuze and Gamer Guides cite Sword and Mace Specialization, replaced October 16 (Warcraft Tavern)

Which races can be a Paladin in WoW Forever?

The Light once answered only the Alliance, and in Forever it answers the Horde as well. Method's list gives Paladin to Human, Dwarf and Undead and notes the class was faction-locked to the Alliance in Classic; Gfinity's list matches. See the race and class combinations guide and the Paladin guide.

Which Alliance race do guides pick, Human or Dwarf?

The Alliance has two roads to the Light, and the guides disagree on the shorter.

  • Warcraft Tavern's Paladin guide (undated, before October 26) calls Human "the obvious choice" for its crit racial, and Dwarf's Stoneform, a flat 10% physical damage reduction, very good for tanking.
  • GamesFuze (September 23) picks Human for general PvE, with Dwarf as the defensive alternative.
  • Gamer Guides (updated October 18) rates Human and Dwarf joint best.
  • mein-mmo (October 28) lists Human for healing and Dwarf for tank and damage, and both for PvP, but omits the newest changes.
  • TimeSaver (updated October 29, after the retunes) gives Human to Holy and Dwarf to Retribution.

What changed for Paladin races in late October?

Blizzard retuned the racials twice late in the beta (see racials explained). Warcraft Tavern's October 16 report says Human Sword Specialization became Ruthless (2% crit) and Dwarf Mace Specialization became Earth Fury (2% critical damage and healing). Its October 26 report says Ruthless fell to 1%, The Human Spirit rose from 5% to 10% Spirit, and Dwarf lost Earth Fury for Artisan's Precision, +1% hit with spells and attacks. Gamerfuzion reports the October 26 figures from Blizzard's forum notes.

Is Undead the right Horde Paladin?

Undead is the only Horde Paladin race, so only its gifts are left to weigh. Warcraft Tavern's guide calls Touch of the Grave the main draw, especially for tanks, while mein-mmo calls it "very unreliable". mein-mmo says Will of the Forsaken, which removes charm, fear and sleep, makes Undead especially strong in PvP. Warcraft Tavern's October 27 report cut the Touch of the Grave internal cooldown from 25 to 15 seconds.

Faction usually settles the choice, since Blizzard says Horde and Alliance cannot group; see how to play with friends.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Racial figures come from the beta, capped at level 30; no source shows how the choice plays at 60.
  • No source I opened measures Human against Dwarf Paladins.

How can the Lore Forever add-on and Willo help with this?

Once the vow is taken, the road begins. The free Lore Forever add-on gives readable story for the zone and quest you stand in, with a Lore button on quests and a Journey page of what you have finished. Willo, a Windows companion app, lets you ask out loud what a Paladin should do next, hear the answer, and keep a per-character notebook. She can be wrong, so treat her answers as a guide. The add-on is optional for her, and she is free to start with 50 answers a day.
