Shan'do
Shan'do is a revered Darnassian honorific meaning "honored teacher" or "honored instructor." Traditionally used within night elven society and druidic circles, it denotes deep reverence toward a mentor who guides another along the path of wisdom and natural magic. Its direct counterpart is thero'shan, meaning "honored student."
A Title of Deep Reverence
In the Darnassian language, shan'do translates directly to "honored teacher" or "honored instructor." It is far more than an occupational label: addressing an elder or mentor as shan'do expresses solemn humility, filial devotion, and enduring respect for their guidance.
The Lineage of the Druids
The title is most famously intertwined with the history of the Cenarion Circle. The demigod Cenarius was the original shan'do to Malfurion Stormrage, instructing him in the ways of nature before the War of the Ancients. In turn, Malfurion became shan'do to generations of mortal druids, to the point where "Shan'do Stormrage" is his standard styling among night elves, forest keepers, and reverent allies across Kalimdor.
Mentors Beyond the Circle
While most common among Cenarion druids—such as disciples addressing Naralex or the slumbering Malfurion—the honorific is fundamentally Darnassian, not exclusively religious. The title represents the bond of transmission between master and pupil, irrespective of the school of thought.
