Murloc

Murlocs are amphibious, bipedal humanoids famous for their gurgling battle cries, territorial coastal villages, and sudden swarming tactics. Though historically dwelling in the deep ocean, they have steadily migrated inland along the shores, lakes, and rivers of Azeroth, acting with far greater coordination and cunning than their primitive appearance suggests.

Creatures of the Shallows

Murlocs dwell in densely populated settlements along coastlines, riverbanks, and freshwater lakes. Averaging roughly four feet in height, they possess bulbous, slime-coated bodies, wide mouths filled with sharp fangs, and keen vision capable of piercing pitch-black water. While individuals are rarely seen wandering far from their kin, encountering one murloc invariably means a dozen more lurk just beneath the surface. They rely on overwhelming numbers and sharp crude weaponry.

The Inland March

Though ancient lineages suggest murlocs have existed beneath the waves since before recorded history, their widespread encroachment onto the landmasses of Lordaeron and Kalimdor is relatively recent. Historians note that this inland migration coincided suspiciously with the reemergence of the serpentine naga from the ocean depths. Some tribes appear to worship deep-sea monstrosities waiting in the oceanic fathoms. Whether fleeing darker terrors or preparing the world for their masters' awakening, their coordinated movement into freshwaters poses a rising threat.

A Hidden Intellect

Because their garbled language sounds like nonsensical bubbling to outsiders, many dismiss murlocs as mere feral pests. However, their coordinated ambushes, mastery of earth and water magic, and communal structures hint at a sharper intellect. Renowned explorer Brann Bronzebeard has suggested that murlocs are far smarter than civilized races realize, intentionally concealing their cunning. Their impact on global history is undeniable: it was a murloc raid upon the Darkspear tribe that spurred Thrall to intervene, forging the alliance between the orcs and trolls that built the modern Horde.
