Southfury River

The Southfury River is one of the most prominent waterways on central Kalimdor, carving a swift and wide path southward from the heights of Mount Hyjal. It forms the natural border separating Azshara from Ashenvale, as well as Durotar from the Barrens, before plunging into the Great Sea near Ratchet.

A Vital Natural Divide

Beginning high in Mount Hyjal, the Southfury drops over dramatic cascades before coursing through central Kalimdor. Its roaring waters serve as a clear geographic divide, separating the sacred forests of Ashenvale from ancient Azshara, and dividing the arid hills of Durotar from the savanna of the Barrens. Only a few strategic bridges dare cross its swift currents—most notably the heavy span guarding the rear gates of Orgrimmar and the crossing connecting Durotar to the Barrens. The river eventually empties into the Great Sea via a cascading waterfall just northeast of the neutral port of Ratchet.

Strategic Importance

For the Horde, the Southfury is both a shield and a vital natural highway. It protects the western approaches of Durotar and Orgrimmar from immediate ground assault while supplying fresh mountain runoff through an otherwise scorched, sun-baked landscape. Just north of the western crossing into Orgrimmar lies a singular geographic crossroads where four major territories converge: Ashenvale, Azshara, Durotar, and the Barrens. Control over this churning waterway ensures supply lines between Orgrimmar and the outlying Horde settlements remain intact.
